This Month's Article

This year I'd like to go back and look at some topics that have, in the past, been popular.  This month's article has helped many parents understand the Irritable Baby Syndrome. "As a mothercraft nurse I visit many homes with unsettled babies.  Parents pacing the floor, pulling their hair out having tried every remedy and potions family and friends have suggested with little or no improvement.  The nightmare some families go through with their babies often results in shattered confidence, mental and physical exhaustion which can lead to postnatal depression, family feuds and marital breakdowns."  To read more please follow the above link.

If there are any topics or subjects that you would like coverd in our monthly articles please let me know through the Contact Us page of our website.

Parents Testimonies

Fiona's Testimonial

Cradle 2 Kindy was recommended to us by a work colleague the day before I went on maternity leave. Of all the baby recommendations that were given to us it’s been the best. Our coach came to us on day 2 after coming home from hospital. By having her in so early it helped us get confidence where we had none as we had no prior experience in parenting or indeed with young children.

Our baby boy looks like he has reflux, we were given some practical solutions to try and overcome this early. We were taught about the importance of trying to get into a routine and were given lots of settling techniques to try and ensure we do the best for our baby and retain our sanity. We had no idea what to expect and what was “normal baby behaviour”.

The time when you come out from hospital is when you are most tired and vulnerable – and it’s when you need most energy and knowledge to get through the first few weeks! C2K’s home visit helps get you over that hump and gave the three of us lots of ideas and helped get us some rest!  Our parenting coach didn’t judge us by how tidy our house was or how stressed or emotional we were.

Now we are learning every day and with our coach providing us an invaluable back up by phone service it has helped us to tackle things head on and with a lot more confidence than we would have had otherwise.

Brendan Byrne's CD testimonial:

Hey Sally, we used the 'sleep solutions' CD today for the first time. WOW! Our baby, Connor (3 weeks old), after about 5 hours of awake time, on and off feeding and crying, we turned on the CD and within 1 min he stopped crying, within 5 mins he was asleep....

Any Questions?

If you have any general questions about Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions service or would like to arrange a visit please don't hesitate to call Sally on 0409 721 145.

Happy Christmas, Happy Hanukah and Seasons Greetings.  I hope you all have a safe and joyful holiday season.  Some of you with children about to enter their first year of school or child care. I would like to cover some preparation steps in this month's article.

Tips for Summer:

To those who have toddlers this is a good time of the year to start toilet training.  Take a look at our previous article How to toilet train your toddler

Just a reminder that you need to keep your child's water consumption up during the summer months to keep them well hydrated.

Also please remember to use a dark wrap over the pram when your out and about not a light one as the glair is bad for their eyes.

For those going away for the holidays we have an article on preparing for a flight: Flying with children .  We also have two great destinations with family friendly holiday homes for those looking to go somewhere new.  Read more under our 'What's Happening?' heading.

A Note from the Editor

Now that we have covered all our main services I'd like to cover in a little more detail some of the things we cover during our visits. In our August newsletter I highlighted the service we provided through our nursery preparations.  This month I would like to cover in more details some of the things that we would discuss.

Nursery Preparations

Both parents will benefit from this visit.  As previous mentioned this two hour visit is especially designed to assist parents from a professional's point of view covering a variety of topics such as the safety standards for baby products and what products are and are not necessarily needed for baby, mother and the nursery. We also provide hand outs including a nursery check list and a handy list of items, for both parents, of things they may need for the birth and during mum's stay in hospital.

The topic I would like to touch on today is: The Cot.

When choosing a cot don't only look for the safety features also remember your baby will be using the cot for several months before you lower the base.  You may at times also need to settle your baby while in the cot so it is advisable to have a cot that you don't have to bend down to.  The higher the base of the cot the better for your back.  Try lowering the side of the cot several times so that you are happy with how it works.  Choose one that you are comfortable with.

Many parents over buy for the first child.  Try to think practically.  You do not need several types of sleeping apparatus.  A cot and a pram with a bassinette will suffice as you can your the bassinette from the pram instead of a bassinette - you will probably need one on wheels anyway and you can only use one at a time so why buy two which have the same function?

Suggestions for buying a cot is only one topic that is covered during our Nursery Preparation visit. Before your Cradle 2 Kindy parenting coach arrives we suggest both parents prepare a list of questions.  This list as well as other topics we thing may be appropriate for your particular family situation will be covered to help enhance your parenting skills to help you prepare for your new baby.

If you know anyone who may benefit from our service please feel free to forward our Cradle 2 Kindy contact details or order a Gift Voucher for our Nursery Preparations visit to help them parpare for their baby.

Cradle 2 Kindy also provides an opportunity for parents to have time off by providing Respite for Parents a Night Nurses or a Professional Babysitter.

This Month's Article

Now I know next term of school is a long way off but it is now that you should start preparing your child for their first day.  That is why I have asked teacher and mother Lee Madigan to write this month's article on how you can prepare in advance your child for school or childcare.

"Starting school or childcare is an exciting time for children but it can also be very daunting. There is a great deal of change and some children (and adults!) adapt quicker and easier than others. Not only do you have to find the right placement for your child but it is also very important to prepare your child for this new step.   There are a few things that you can do to help your child prepare. ." ..... click here to read more.

Isobel's story

Our son George (a twin to Connie) had always been a 'windy' baby.  When I talked to my health visitor in the UK about my concerns she just put it down to the fact that he was on formula.  At 8 months we moved to Sydney, changed formula but the same symptoms continued.  He had never slept through the night, rarely had more than 90ml of milk at bed time and then woke up crying for a bottle between 11 pm and 2am.  Weaning him was quite challenging as he seemed to have so much trapped wind that he would stop eating and appeared really uncomfortable.  Meanwhile his twin sister had no problems at all.  Around the age of 12 months, George suddenly started waking up in the night screaming in agony.  For hours on end he would scream and writhe around in pain, lifting up his legs, burping, farting and moaning.  We just didn't know how to help him - nothing seemed to settle him - not even the milk that he was still having in the night.  The only way he calmed down was if my husband or I walked around the house holding him over our arm - he yelled if we even perched on the arm of a chair.

I took him to the GP who examined him and sent him for an abdominal ultrasound.  I heard nothing back from the GP so called in a week later to see what they had found.  The US revealed nothing and the report came back that 'no action was required' - BUT we needed some action! George was getting worse and we were losing the plot.  So, back to the GP who told us to try Mylanta.  We did.  It did nothing. By this stage poor George was so sleep deprived and in agony and had been for weeks.  We were due to see a Paediatrician in a further couple of weeks about another ongoing issue George has but there was no way we could wait that long for help and the GP did not seem to have any answers.

I had reached a really low point by now and insisted that my husband did 2 nights on duty in a row as otherwise I was heading for the funny farm.  After the first night he realised how bad George had got and agreed we had to find help.  So, the following day I scoured the internet for numbers and Mark sent out 2 or 3 emails.  The name that stood out during my research was 'Sally' from Cradle 2 Kindy as her name popped up on a couple of chat forums as having worked miracles.  Amazingly Sally not only responded to my husband's message but she came out to see us the following day - a bank holiday!

Within minutes of describing George's symptoms, Sally said without doubt that he had reflux.  She went on to talk about all the other symptoms that we hadn't even been aware of - like his frequent nose rubbing and gulping and the desire to drink milk to soothe his throat - apparently all signs of reflux.  It was such a huge relief to finally have an answer.  She talked us through some practical tips and possible medication he may need, and suggested other changes to help him recover.  So, although we were due to see the Paed the following week we went straight back to the GP to start on the medication.  Fortunately the GP prescribed medication which the Paed then confirmed was what we needed.  After an increase in the initial dose, here we are with a happy, settled little chap who sleeps solidly for 11 hours. It is such a relief.

Christmas, Hanukah and the school holidays are on their way.  Are you prepared!  For those looking for holiday ideas I have included two great spots which are both family friendly under our 'What's Happening?' heading.

Enjoy this month's newsletter; I hope you find something of interest that may help you or your friends and family in their journey as parents.

A Note from the Editor

Thank you to all those who have given me feedback on the articles.  Please keep your comments and suggestions coming.  If you have anything you would like others to know about (non commercial) then please send me an email so I can include it in this section.  This includes baby/children’s products that you would like to pass on to others.

In this month's Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions service I would like to move on from babies and take a look at our service for the older child; our parenting assistance for Toddler and Child. If you are unaware Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions, as the name suggests, provides assistance to parents with children from birth to 5 years. Our Toddler and Child service is for children from around 18 months up to and including 5 years of age.

Toddler & Child

This service addresses problems or difficulties primarily around behaviour. We cover topics such as recognising the needs of your child, developing their self esteem, teaching techniques promote sleep, bedtime routines and night waking, moving a child from the cot to the bed and teaching them to stay in their bed, establishing a daily routine, dispelling temper tantrums, how to address problems before they begin, advice on weaning, solids and food refusal, toilet training, non acceptable social behaviour such as biting, pinching and hitting, preparing for a new baby, tips on sibling rivalry, ideas for play and development, and very importantly - time out for yourself.

Our visits may cover an overnight stay to assist with sleep routines and night waking issues.  Alternatively we may offer a three hour or extended day visitation to cover topics involving behavioural management.

This service includes information on your child’s age related needs, two weeks of follow up phone calls, a series of weekly e-letters to assist you for a month and an e-book with information on age appropriate tips on parenting, our monthly newsletter and access to our member's area. Cradle 2 Kindy also provides an opportunity for parents to have time off by providing Respite for Parents a Night Nurses or a Professional Babysitter.

Before your personal parenting coach from Cradle 2 Kindy comes to your home we suggest both parents prepare a list of questions you would like to cover.  We will then go through this list as well as other topics we thing may be appropriate for your particular family situation to help enhance your parenting skills and achieve a harmonious household.

Testimonial:  "C2K has changed our household beyond belief. If someone had told me that by putting the steps in place discussed in one phone call our 2yr old would be staying in bed within 10 minutes and sleeping through the night and back to having day sleeps after 3 nights I wouldn’t have believed it. C2K has given us the tools to be better parents, and given us the chance to spend time together once the kids are in bed by 7pm...not 10pm! Even though we only spoke on the phone and emailed for our coaching we are so pleased with the results! Sally was always available whenever we had any queries and always took the time to talk through the process without it ever feeling rushed or that our 'issues' weren’t important". Danielle, South Australia

E-book testimonial: "We have found your Toddler and Child e-book a great help with our daughter.  It not only provides practical tips but it is also very straight forward. We found the tips on behaviour very helpful for our 3 yr old especially in regards to setting boundaries, preparing for a new baby and sibling rivalry.  We have put many of these techniques into practice particularly in preparation for our second child which we feel had really helped our daughter now that the baby is home.  We have now ordered the 0 - 3 month e-book.  They are a great asset to me and my husband. Thanks.  Janelle"

What's Happening?

November 14-20 is Postnatal Depression Awareness Week.  To assist us help raise awareness and reduce the stigma of PND I have asked Beyond Blue to provide us with some facts.

"Depression affects one in 11 women during pregnancy and one in seven mums will experience depression in the year following the birth of their child.  Having depression and anxiety is not a normal part of having a baby, having the ‘baby blues’ and/or sleep deprivation is not PND.  Postnatal Depression does not go away on its own.  But help is available and with the right treatment, you can recover.  It’s important to get help early – talk to your GP or contact beyondblue on 1300 22 4636 or infoline@beyondblue.org.au

Help raise awareness and reduce the stigma of depression by doing sometimes, simple – talking about it.  Talking openly about depression and anxiety does help reduce the stigma.  To find out more and share the facts with your family, friends and local community go to the beyondblue website."

Holidays are just around the corner!  Have you made any preparations?  Are your thinking of taking a trip interstate and wondering where to take the family?  I have just the place for you.  Are you wine lovers? Take a look at Quince Cottage in Gracetown WA.  Views of the beach and a short drive to Margret River.  Maybe that's a bit far, why not try The Terrace Grove in Ocean Grove VIC. Kid's and pet friendly.  It's just a short walk to the beach and the surf.

Kathaleen's story

“We had ongoing problems getting our toddler to bed and getting her to stay in bed during the night.  She was constantly fighting us in the evenings and often falling asleep in the lounge watching TV.  We knew this was not right but what else could be do!  When put to bed asleep she would wake during the night and sneak into our bed.  If we were to exhausted to move her she would often stay there till the morning.  We called Cradle 2 Kindy in desperation.  Our coach stayed two nights providing assistance and practical tips that really helped.  After 4 nights of following the routine our daughter now happily goes to bed and sleep in till 7 am.  What a change.  I wish we had called them earlier.” Penrith, NSW

October 2010

Friday, October 01, 2010

Welcome to our October newsletter.  I hope you find something of interest that may help you or your friends and family in their journey as parents.

A Note from the Editor

Thank you to all those who have given me feedback on the articles.  Please keep your comments and suggestions coming.  I have changed our heading What’s New to What’s Happening.  If you have anything you would like others to know about (non commercial) then please send me an email so I can include it in this section.  This includes baby/children’s products that you would like to pass on to others.

This month I would like to highlight Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions Baby Care service. This service is for babies from around 3 months to approximately eighteen months of age.

Baby Care

Our baby care service primarily addresses problems or difficulties that have arisen within the first few months of baby's life.  These circumstances are often due to a lack understanding surrounding a baby’s need for a routine.  This may have lead to poor sleep habits such as catnapping (waking after 45 mins instead of sleeping 2 to 2½ hours) and snacking (feeding under 3½ hours).   We also address topics such as breast, bottle and food refusal, starting solids, age appropriate play, weaning, poor day sleep,  night waking and reflux management.

Cradle 2 Kindy provides you with your own personal parenting coach.  Your coach will assist you with professional advice to help enhance your parenting skills and achieve a harmonious household.

This service includes information on your baby’s age related needs, two weeks of follow up phone calls, a series of weekly e-letters to assist you for a month and an e-book with information on age appropriate tips on parenting, our monthly newsletter and access to our member's area.

Cradle 2 Kindy also provides an opportunity for parents to have time off by providing
respite for parents, night nurses and professional babysitting

Testimonial:  "We enlisted the help of Cradle to Kindy when our now 6 month old son was 13 weeks old. He had become "addicted" to the dummy, and was unable to sleep for longer than 45 minutes in the day, and a few hours at night, due to the dummy falling out. Our coach came and showed us how to help him to learn to settle himself, with gentle techniques and ongoing support which made us confident enough to keep up the strategy she introduced. Our son is now sleeping through the night, and even on occasion giggles as we lay him down in his cot. Our experience this time around with Cradle to Kindy's help, is so different to our first child who never learnt to self settle. We are all contented and well rested thanks to the wonderful contribution that our coach has made to our lives". Bayview, NSW

“Following an illness our 13 month old, Jacob, became dependent on help to go to sleep and eventually slept in bed with my husband and I.  After one month of very little sleep by all of us I was referred to Cradle 2 Kindy by my GP and I was hoping for a miracle, which is exactly what we received.  After 2 nights our parent coach had Jacob sorted out and he now sleeps from 7 pm to 7 am, hasn't been night waking and his day sleeps are getting longer.  He is a different baby, now that he is getting proper sleep, and I am a much better mum for it.  We couldn't be happier with the service provided by Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions.” Wollongong, NSW

If you know anyone with a baby who you think may benefit from a visit from Cradle 2 Kindy please feel free to forward them our contact details.  On the other hand you may like to give them a Gift Voucher for a Baby Care visit.

Parenting e-books

Our e-books available online through our Publications are: 'The Cradle Will Rock' 0-3 months (86 pages), 'Rock a Bye Baby' 3-9 months (103 pages), 'When the Wind Blows' 9-18 months (88 pages), and 'When the Bough Breaks' toddler and child (74 pages).

E-book testimonial: "I would just like to thank you for your great e-books which had been a wonderful asset to me and my husband.  We have an 11 month old who has always been a handful.  We put some of your techniques and advice into practice about 5 weeks ago and have seen a dramatic change in his behaviour.   He has begun to feed himself and is generally much better behaved both during mealtimes and during the day.   I must say our house is more like a home now with a happy baby which means a happy mummy and daddy.  We are certainly a much more relaxed family.  I will definitely be purchasing the Toddler and Child e-book soon.  Thanks.  Isabelle"

What's Happening?

I have changed this section from What's New to What's Happening.  Did you know our new website has been up for over 2 years!  Wow how time flies!

I would like to bring your attention to a very worthy organisation Homes of Hope International  (HOHI) this organisation is rescuing woman and children in third world countries who are at risk.

Homes of Hope International was established in 2004 in response to numerous opportunities and invitations to work with partners in the third world who were rescuing women and children at risk.  HOHI provide ways for women and children in third world countries to escape the poverty cycle.  This involves education and assistance in self sufficiency as well as providing a safe place for women and children to receive healing for the physical and psychological wounds they have experienced. HOHI presently have six orphanages and rely on donations from sponsors and supporters to meet the needs of the children in the homes. You can find out more information on line at Homes of Hope International

Kristyn's comments

I cannot recommend this service enough. I am eternally grateful to Cradle to Kindy for the expert advice and help we received. I was at breaking point with a 6 month old who for the last 2 months only catnapped in the day and slept and 1hr at night if lucky, plus trying to manage an extremely active 3 yr old. I had sought help from paediatrician, dr, clinic nurse, other mums but all to no avail.

I needed someone to come to our home as I couldn't do a stay away program so I did a search and found C2K. I was very hesitant at first but now my only regret is not knowing about them earlier. Sally was brilliant and came and did a night stay that night. She diagnosed a reflux problem, put some new management into place and by the second night the baby was sleeping through and we are continuing to see great results with both children. Whilst it is not always easy implementing a new routine and procedure, and I still feel nervous and uncertain at times, the change is amazing. I am so grateful". Yarrawarrah NSW

September 2010

Spring is now upon us so let's make the most of our lovely sunny days and cool nights before the heat sets in.  I hope you will enjoy this edition of our Cradle 2 Kindy newsletter.  Happy reading!

A Note from the Editor

My apologies for the 'missing link' in the last newsletter.  If you do notice any glitches or errors in the newsletter or on the website please let me know so that I can amend them immediately.

To continue bringing your attention the services we at Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions provide, I would like to highlight Newborn Care in this issue.

Newborn Baby Care

It is often very intimidating coming home after spending time in hospital where professional assistance is just a buzzer away. Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions can also be just a phone call away.   This service provides a home visit with a minimum of 3 hours (which may be extended if needed), two weeks of phone assistance, our e-book with tips for parents with babies 0-3 months old and 4 follow up emails to keep you on track.

Those who have experienced our parenting service have continued to recommend it to their friends.  Why? Because there's nothing out there quite like it.  We provide you with your very own parenting coach who can take you through from your arrival home till your child is five years old!

The topics covered are - parent support, breastfeeding, how to prevent sleep issues - cat napping and snacking, understanding sleep needs, newborn care, settling techniques for newborns, when and how to establish a routine, calming an crying baby, colic/reflux management, assistance with multiple births - twins and triplets.   We also provide handouts and charts on age appropriate needs for baby.

Testimonial:  After coming home from hospital, my husband and I were worried we were patting our son to sleep.  Whilst this was effective, we were worried in 7 months time we would still be doing the same thing. C2K was recommended to me by a work colleague.  The same day I called, our coach was at my house 6 hours later providing my husband and I with invaluable advice.  I would recommend Cradle 2 Kindy's service to any new parents wanting to establish good sleep / feeding routines for newborns.  Kerri Manly, NSW

“Cradle 2 Kindy provided us with a parenting coach who gave both myself and my partner the confidence to settle a newborn, even though it was our second baby, we had a lot to learn. Our coach was a great help and would recommend Cradle 2 Kindy services to any new or old parents.” Wendy - Newtown, NSW

If you know anyone with a baby who you think may benefit from a visit from Cradle 2 Kindy please feel free to forward our contact details.  On the other hand you may like to give them a Gift Voucher for Newborn Care visit.

Thanks.  Isabelle"

This Month's Article

Our guest writer this month is Elizabeth Carter, registered psychologist and owner of Bravo Communication. Her article is titled Reflecting on Motherhood.  "Some years ago, on meeting my 2 daughters, a friend said “You’re so lucky, you’re girls are lovely.  They are so friendly and polite.”  I said “Thank you” feeling the pride and joy that goes with such a moment.  Later, on reflection however, I thought to myself, “What did luck have to do with it?”   I’m not lucky, it was hard work and I made a lot of sacrifices." ..... click here to read the full story Reflecting on Motherhood

Continuing on last month's topic we now take a look at  look at Phobias, Fears and Anxiety in Young Children and next month I will look at tips to help your children overcome their fears

Nadine's Testimonial

"I called Cradle 2 Kindy when my baby was around 6 months old. She had been diagnosed as having reflux and was having extremely disturbed day sleeps. She was very irritable and the medicine she had been prescribed seemed to have little effect on alleviating her distress. She was also waking up several times a night, which was very exhausting for all of us. Our Cradle 2 Kindy consultant came around and stayed 2 nights, teaching us how to settle her when she woke. The second night she didn't wake at all and after that she stopped waking during the night at all, unless she was unwell. We were given advice on the appropriate measures to take to control of her reflux - which worked wonders. She is now 16 months old and doing great. I cannot recommend Cradle 2 Kindy highly enough and am so grateful for the wonderful help and support our Cradle 2 Kindy consultant gave us."   Mosman NSW

August 2010

Sunday, August 01, 2010

Welcome to our August edition of Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions newsletter. I hope you will find something of interest in this edition.

A Note from the Editor

I wonder how many of you were able to attend the Starlight Foundation ball.  Thank you to all those who did find time to attend.  It certainly is a worthy cause.

In our June newsletter I brought to your attention the services we at Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions services provide.  Over then next few issues I would like to highlight some of these services.  In this issue I would like to bring to your attention our Nursery Preparations

Nursery Preparations

This two hour visit is an excellent pre baby-shower gift for any parents to be. Why pre-baby-shower? Getting a professionals point of view on appropriate brands and products you and your baby may requirement will help you make your wish list and may help you avoid buying unnecessary items which you may need to return later.

Both parents will benefit from this professional visit as we cover a variety of topics such as the safety standards for baby products, what products are and are not necessarily needed for baby, mother and the nursery.

These topics cover - clothing, bedding, nursery equipment and furniture, bath, feeding and medical needs, play ideas, car and home fittings, prams, safety around the home and many more ideas for baby, nursery and mother. Hand outs and a nursery check list is also provided. We also provide a handy list of items, for both parents, of things they may need for the birth and during mum's stay in hospital.

Testimonial:  Unfortunately we didn’t know about this service till after the baby shower even so the information we received was extremely valuable.  We were given such helpful information which certainly prepared both my husband and I for the hospital visit and for our baby’s home coming.  Our coach then returned to help us with our newborn.  I’d definitely recommend this service to any first time parents, to help you prepare for your baby.  Linda, Randwick, NSW

If you know anyone expecting a baby and would like to give them a gift you know will have an impact our Gift Voucher for the Nursery Preparations.

E-book testimonial: "Hi, I just wanted to say thank you for your great website and publications (as well as the giant wraps!). Since I started a routine with my 4 month old, about 3 weeks ago, using lots of your advice from your e-book we haven't looked back. Before doing this I was finding myself frequently feeding after 3 hours, nearly having mastitis twice and generally feeling frazzled and unable to get out to do anything.

After a hard slog for the first week and probably an increase in the amount of crying in our house - that includes my baby, me, my husband (nearly) and probably my other 2 girls I have noticed that we are all a lot more relaxed, me especially. I have time to do things again, and by 7:00-7:30 each night ALL of our kids are in bed and I can relax with my husband. Every day my baby is easier to resettle and I am getting more and more confident, and less worried about him waking when it is not time for a feed He also seems happier and more relaxed and as you advised I am starting to wander round my house wondering what to do with the extra time I've got again! Anyway it's just on 10pm so it's time to go and feed!  Regards, Jennifer."

We would love to hear from others who have found our e-books or any of our products helpful. Please email me via our Contact Us page

Warm regards,

Sally Hall

What's New?

Thanks to word going out about our service to families in rural areas through information on our Correspondence Consultation and Case Studies pages, Sally had a trip up to Singleton to assist with a two year old's bedtime routine and night waking. It was a lovely break from travelling the streets of Sydney. The GPS took her on a winding rout through the beautiful Aussie bush past several farm gate produce on sale. Unfortunately she didn't return by the same route as she was looking forward to buying some fresh farm produce.

Thanks also to existing clients who have passed on our contact details to friends and family in other states. We have received quite a few inquiries and are now supporting parents in Western Aust, Victoria and rural NSW. Below read a happy testimonial from one of our client in Perth, WA. Thank you to all those who have passed on our contact details.

This Month's Article

June was a busy month for me with toddlers and young children which has lead me to address a few issue over the next few months that as parents you too may face.  Some of which can scare the wits out of parents. The first of these is topics I will cover in this and the next issue is: Phobias, Fears and Anxiety in babies and young children.

"Parents naturally want to protect their children against the terrors and pains this world can bring but unfortunately there are some things that we may not be able to protect our children from". .....click here to read the full story on Phobias, Fears and Anxiety.

Leanne's E-mail from WA

My son was diagnosed with Silent reflux at 6 weeks old. I remember feeling disappointed we didn't realise what was going on earlier. We gave him the small dose of Losec prescribed and thought we were on top of things. Things didn't get better. We had a day stay at the Mothercraft Residential Centre, (which he slept through, I must have called them at least 20 times, sought help from the local community health nurse and numerous appointments with our paediatrician.

Despite my efforts, we had no routine. I was feeding 3-4 times at night. Rocking him for 40 minutes in his pram to get a 20 minute sleep during the day. He was ALWAYS tired and would often have times where he would be screaming in pain for 1-2 hours until the pain subsided. My whole day consisted of me trying to get him to sleep. I was given so much conflicting information: it's a growth spurt, feed him more during the day, he will grow out of it. At 18 weeks I was told about C2K from a friend in Sydney. As we live in Perth, I was able to use C2K services via correspondence.

I cannot imagine what our lives would be like if we hadn't had the help from Cradle 2 Kindy. Our parenting coach, Sally has been heaven sent! Sally was correct...medication was the key to our son's contentment. I had got into so many bad habits just trying to keep him from crying and get him to sleep. Sally gave me the tools to completely change this around. I now have a son who sleeps during the day and sleeps through at night but most of all he isn't screaming in pain. I never imagined this could happen so quickly.

Using Cradle 2 Kindy via correspondence has been a piece of cake. Sally has always been contactable within a few hours when I have needed her. I managed to achieve everything she outlined. I have stuck to her advice and with persistence and being consistent, my son is living a much happier pain free life.

He is actually giggling and not crying during his up time.

If I could, I would nominate Sally for the Nobel peace prize!!! She has certainly bought peace to our house.

Having a baby with reflux is a challenge and can take its toll. I just feel so lucky to have had the opportunity for Sally to help us especially when no one in Perth could".

July 2010

Welcome to our July edition of Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions newsletter.

A Note from the Editor

This month I have asked Todd Anderson to tell us a little about the Starlight Foundation.

Todd writes "Whilst spending some quality time with Sally as she worked her magic on our little Riley, we got to talking about the upcoming Starlight foundation fundraiser in Sydney, the Sydney Star Ball.

A little about the Starlight Foundation : since 1988, Starlight has brightened the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their families, by delivering innovative programs that restore the fun, laughter and joy that serious illness takes away.

Living with illness or injury can cause enormous strain in the lives of children and their families.  Starlight delivers programs designed to make children happy and lift their spirits when they need it most.  Starlight brings fun and laughter to children no matter their illness or where they live. Each year there are over 600,000 child admissions made to hospitals across Australia with an increasing number of children spending extended periods recuperating in the home following hospital treatment.  Sadly, Starlight reaches only ‘1 in 3’ of these children.

Your opportunity to make a difference: whilst the people reading this will attest, kids that don’t sleep can be hard work, there are families out there doing it much tougher than ourselves. The Sydney Star Ball provides us with an opportunity to really make a difference to these kids and their families, whilst enjoying a great night out with friends. 2010 marks the 13th of the Sydney Star Ball and we're aiming to raise in excess of $350,000 - this will only be achieved if people make an active choice to get involved and get along to the event…with sleeping babies, I'm hoping you'll call in a babysitter and join Kara and I at the event on 28/8/10.  The 2010 Starlight Ball will be held at Star City Casino in the Grand Ballroom and feature top shelf food and beverage, entertainment and experiences. Click here to download our booking form…with all this sleep you're now getting, there are no excuses!

Hope to see you there!  You can contact Todd for further information on: 0407 431 152.

Many of you commented on our last month's articles one by Dr Andrews on  'Promoting Good Learning Behaviour & Attention' and the other on 'Food Frustration'  I'm thrilled that I was able to bring you these two interesting topics.

This week Michelle Fox, a registered psychologist, talks about the psychological impact of your baby’s reflux on you and your family:  "I am a mother of two children who both suffered from reflux as babies and a psychologist who continues to see exhausted and distraught mothers of babies with reflux in my practise.".....  click here to read the full story.

Catherine's E-mail

“Words cannot express our gratitude for your expertise and help. We were at wits end regarding getting our 4.5 month old baby boy to sleep and had no idea our poor petal had silent reflux. I was totally amazed at the difference your suggestions made immediately (within 12 hours). We went from a screaming, 'fighting sleep' boy who couldn't sleep longer than 20 mins during the day, fed every 3 hours and was awake up to 5 times per night - to sleeping 4-6 hours during the day in 2 hour blocks and sleeping during the night on your first visit. I was also delighted you gave me the courage to wake my 'non sleeper' to dream feed him - he now can sleep through the entire night! An equal thrill to sleeping is how you managed to get us to to self settle him on the first night (after 4.5 months of consistent rocking him to sleep in our arms that took anything from 1 hour to 3 hours and during the day 45 mins of rocking for a 20 min sleep reward with only 10 mins of this in the cot)! You have completely changed all our lives for the better and provided us with a 24 hour baby routine that has made our baby boy so much happier and calmer. I still can't believe my 8 kilo plus baby can quickly self settle on his own with your techniques - it is like a dream for a chronically sleep deprived family. And I love we can now choose where he sleeps during the day (not forced to take the pram or drive the car on freeways) the cot is now our first option! My husband and I are also eating hot dinners together for the first time since he was born ...

You are a real life Mary Poppins to us - and I would recommend you (and have) to anyone with an unsettled baby or needing expert sleep and feeding advice. Your knowledge, friendliness and professionalism are unique.

Thank you, thank you for radically changing our lives - we are so pleased to have found you.  Eternally grateful".

Helen's Comments

"Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions has helped with both our children now. I was referred to them by a friend when my son was 10 weeks old. We already had a lot of 'bad' habits like rocking him to sleep and we were also dealing with reflux. After a visit from our coach we worked hard at the routine and all the tips she gave us and within 2 weeks he was sleeping so well and even 8 hrs at night!! When our daughter arrived I called our coach when she was just 2.5 weeks. I was breast feeding and the 'demand' feeding that everyone tells you is necessary was driving us crazy and our little girl was becoming more unsettled. Within 24 hours of our coach's visit she was down to 6 feeds in 24 hrs and in a routine!! Our coach's assistance with my two kids has been second to none. No amount of reading or advice from doctors/nurses etc could compare. I tell everyone that there is something 'magic' about Cradle 2 Kindy's service - they have been our family's lifesaver. Thanks C2K!!!!".

Alison's Testimonial

“My 4 month old was waking 5 to 6 times per night. I knew she had a reflux problem but I was using a dummy for this and thickened formula. She had a fairly organised day routine so I could tell something was not right with her reflux that her night sleeping was poor. Cradle 2 Kindy was a fantastic help as our coach came to my home and explained to me the pattern of disturbance that occurs with reflux ie unsettled in the late afternoon and in the early morning (3 to 5am). She managed to settle my baby within 1 sleep cycle by changing the way she was wrapped, not using the dummy when first put to sleep so she could learn to self settle, tipping the bed and discussing medications with me. Now my baby is sleeping from the dream feed to 5am without stirring and we are getting some much needed sleep. I wish I had known this information for my first child who I realise now would have benefited from these strategies too."

Ian's Comments

My wife and I were absolutely impressed by our coach's knowledge and confidence and more importantly effectiveness.

Here’s a small sample of the mothercraft nurse, we’ve used to assist with our twins. When she come to our home she literally transformed our lives into some form resembling order. She was to the point, no nonsense and very practical, whilst being aware and considerate of our ways and concerns. In one afternoon session and a follow up, she had our daughter breastfeeding after us trying with hospital staff for 3 weeks, and helped our son with his reflux . End result……SLEEEEEEP .... HAPPY BABIES...HAPPY WIFE..... HAPPY LIFE!

What's New?

I have added an Iron Rich Food list to our articles page for those wanting to know what natural foods you can offer your children.  I have also updated the name of our once called Shopping Guide to 'Product Reviews' which I'm told is more relevant with content of this page.  So if you are looking for products and what to know what other parents or health professionals might suggest take a look here before you make your purchase.

This Month's Article

As previously mentioned this year I have several articles on health which I hope you will benefit from.  Our second writer is Alti Vogel, an Orthotist, who works at the Children’s Hospital assisting in the design and manufacture of helmets for babies with misshapen heads.  Her article is 'Flat Spot on Baby's Head'

'Some babies are born with flat spots on their heads. This is often due to the position they were in while in the uterus, other times it may be cause during the birth procedure or as in many cases it is the result of regularly sleeping with the head in the same position'.  click here to read the full story.

I also thought it may be helpful to include an article on starting your child in childcare or school.  This relates to parents who either need to return to work or who have enrolled their child in school.  My article is entitled ‘Preparing for Childcare or School’.

Preparing your child for the first day of childcare or school can be a daunting task physically, financially and emotionally’. ' click here to read the full story.

Hana's Testimonial

“Our son was very unsettled from the day he was born. We put it down to a fussy baby. Sally Hall was recommended to us by our paediatrician to come and help us with settling, so we could get some much needed sleep. After a few moments of Sally watching our sons behaviour she said “you can not settle a child that is in pain”. We could not believe our ears.  Sally believed that our baby had either reflux or a dairy intolerance.   She proceeded to advise us about techniques we could use in the meantime to make our baby more comfortable....which worked. We went back to our paediatrician and started to treat our son for BOTH reflux and dairy intolerance and what do you know....he stopped crying. Thank you Sally without your help who knows what would have happened to us!

Nov - Dec 2009

Although summer seems to have been with us since September be prepared for the heat yet to come.  Children overheat quickly when racing around, so have plenty of water on hand.  Keep baby covered up, in 100% shade and be aware of the glare from water or sand that can also cause burning.  Hydrate baby with cooled boiled water during the hot days.  Take a look at our Clothing Guide and our article on How to Prevent and Treat Dehydration in Children.

As we approach the holiday season, if you are looking for some tips traveling by air we have some practical advice in our article on Flying With Children.

How are you going with the toilet training?  I hope the tips in our last newsletter have helped.  Thanks for your positive feedback on the Brolly Sheets and Chair Pads helping protect your furniture against accidental wettings.

Catherine’s Story

After 8 months of no sleep, and listening to our twin babies constantly screaming who seemed to always be in pain, we approached C2K for some phone advice - we don't have anything like her service in Adelaide.  The medical professionals we had spoken with felt that while there was a possibility they may have silent reflux it was more likely that they were just very difficult babies.  The trial of reflux medication had not seemed to work either.  Our C2K coach was certain that the boys had silent reflux and that their dosage of medication was not sufficient.  Although this seemed contradictory to our paediatrician's advice, it made sense to me (even in our completely sleep deprived state) so our coach advice gave us the confidence to approach a different paediatrician who agreed to increase the dosage of Losec.  The change in the boys was almost instant, they now sleep beautifully and so do we.  Thanks Cradle 2 Kindy!

Kass’s Comments
