Happy Christmas, Happy Hanukah and Seasons Greetings.  I hope you all have a safe and joyful holiday season.  To those who have children about to enter their first year of school or child care, you might like to take a look at a previous article Childcare and School Preparations and The pros and cons of child care.

To those who have toddlers this is a good time of the year to start toilet training. Take a look at our previous article How to Toilet Train Your Toddler  Just a reminder that you need to keep your child's water consumption up during the summer months to keep them well hydrated. Also please remember to use a dark wrap over the pram when you are out and about, not a light one as the glare is bad for their eyes.

For those going away for the holidays we have an article on preparing for a flight: Flying with Children and  tips for Travelling with Young Children.  We also have four great destinations with family friendly holiday homes for those looking to go somewhere new.  These are:

Quince Cottage in Gracetown WA. Views of the beach and a short drive to Margaret River. Or visit Victoria and have a relaxing holiday at The Terrace Grove in Ocean Grove, Ruby Haven, a quiet bush location one hour out of Geelong or stay in Geelong. All are child and pet friendly. The Terrace Grove is just a short walk to the beach and the surf. For more information follow the link to Holiday Letting,

I hope you have been enjoying our family recipes. Last month's recipe was Sushi for Kids, This is our last recipe to be posted I have chosen a Christmas recipe from my childhood White Christmas I hope you enjoy it.

Angela's Story

I can't thank Cradle 2 Kindy enough for our parenting coach, her practical knowledge, guidance and straight talking. As a first time mum I had no idea why Ellie was so unhappy all the time and not sleeping - everyone just said she'd grow out of it. But I was overwhelmed and beyond tired so the knowledge and day plan (and diagnosis of silent reflux) that our coach shared saved my sanity. Ellie is like a different baby - so much happier and I am a much happier (and more rested) mum. Thank you!

August 2011

Monday, August 01, 2011

Welcome to Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions August newsletter.  I hope you have been enjoying our family recipes.  Thanks for the feed back on our last month’s recipe Hungarian Pasta I'm glad you enjoyed it. This month we are going with a sweet dish, Chocolate Brownies.

Please keep your recipes coming.

A Note from the Editor

With our winter weather upon us please remember to rug your babies and toddlers up when going out doors.  If you are concerned about how much to dress your children in please read our article on Changing Seasons and how it Effects your Child's Temperature and our link with our Clothing Guide chart.

Baby’s room should be heated where possible as dooners and loose bedding are not safe. All bedding should be tucked in firmly under the mattress. If your baby is sleeping in a wrap you can line a larger wrap with a shorter, flannelette to make it warmer.

Sleeping bags are a great transition from a baby wrap. Although we encourage parents to wrap babies till around 7-10 month to assists with sleep, we also suggest when using a sleeping bag to continue to use a top sheet as part of babies sleep association. This will help when moving them from a cot to a bed.

Topic of Interest

As mentioned in our last newsletter over the next few editions I am looking at some of the common poisons and hazards found in our cupboards. These hazards are often disguised in familiar household products used around most homes such as parabens, talc, mineral oils and formaldehyde.

Last month we looked at parabens, this month I would like to take a closer look at talc.

Talc Products

Talc is another unknown toxin commonly used on babies.  It can also be found in a wide variety of products such as body powder, garden pesticides, flea and tick powders and in smaller quantities in products such as deodorants, antacids, chalk, food processing. Where the greatest concern is, is in the products where talc is the main ingredient. This is where it poses the most serious health risk. These are in baby powder and perfumed body powder.

Talc is toxic and has been known to cause lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses and can for this reason endanger baby’s lungs.  Medical records have shown that as early as the 1980s several thousand infants each year died or became seriously ill following accidental inhalation of baby powder. Nowadays many brands of baby power have replaced talc with cornflour.

Talc has also been known to cause ovarian cancer in women who regularly use talc in their underwear or on sanitary pads. Some scientific studies have found talc to be closely related to asbestos.

Note: When choosing products for you or your baby read the contents first.

Sally Hall

This Month's Article

This month I'd like to take a look at 'Feeding and Speech Development'. "Babies are all very different and develop at different stages; this includes their ability to learn how to take solids and to speak. Some factors that may contribute to oral and speech development can be their environment, birth order, being a twin, their personality or have parents or caregivers speak to them in more than one language. Even their parent’s skills and abilities could affect not only their ability to take solids but also the development of their speech...” ... click on the link above to read more.

Carla's Story

My youngest of 3 children was catnapping during the day but sleeping well at night till recently when she began to wake frequently at night too. I was becoming more and more sleep deprived myself. I need my sleep to tend to the everyday demands of our older children. I heard about Cradle 2 Kindy through a friend and gave them a call. Our coach took me through what my baby should be doing for her age and how we were to accomplish our new routine which encouraged our baby girl to sleep longer both day and night.

Now our new routine and all is going well, she is loving the routine and she has been so much easier to put to sleep. I now have time not only for my older children but to read other peoples comments and article on the Cradle 2 Kindy website. The family is functioning much better in just 2 days and I couldn't be happier with her progress. She has been having tummy time and we are getting loads more smiles and happy noises from her.

June was a month of night waking babies.  I’m pleased to say all are sleeping much better since learning how to self-settle.

Topic of Interest

In the next few editions I would like to take a look at some of the common poisons we have in our cupboards.  Poisons come in a variety of products some of which are less obvious than others and are found readily around most homes, these are parabens, talc, mineral oils and formaldehyde.

It is these poisons that I would like to take a closer look.

Baby Body Wash Products & Parabens

Sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl ether sulfate can be found in many personal care products including baby products which claim to be soap free such as liquid soap and shampoos.   Technically these products are soap free but there is a catch.  Sodium laureth sulphate is actually a detergent an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent which is also used in cleaning products such as washing up detergent and floor cleaner.  Something you would not use on your skin let alone your baby’s delicate skin.

Many of these so called ‘soap free’ products are a major cause of dry skin and may contribute to eczema and dermatitis.  Read all labels on your baby products and try to avoid any with harsh detergents.

Parabens can be found in many of the main brand baby products and other products such as shampoos, soaps and cleansers and are known to cause dermatitis.  Recently they have been linked with some types of cancers.

Parabens are used as a preservative in topical pharmaceutical products. They can also be found in cosmetics, skin care products, medications and foods.

Note: When choosing products for you or your baby read the contents first.

For more information take a look at the following link: DermNet - allergy to Parabens

Quote: topical parabens have recently been reported to have weak oestrogenic effects leading to concerns about breast cancer. Research is on-going.

Carol's Story

I cannot thank Cradle 2 Kindy enough. Their service completely changed our little girl for the better. She was constantly in pain and would not sleep. She was very hard to be around and especially to see her crying and screaming in pain all the time. Our C2K coach gave us suggestions on how to administer the medication effectively and also assisted me with sleep techniques and aids. These things were just amazing. We now have a happy baby that smiles and giggles and best of all sleeps!!. Nothing was ever a problem for our coach.  I rang her so so many times and she was always willing to help. I highly recommend this service - there is nothing to lose and so much to gain.

Welcome to our April newsletter and a Happy Easter or Passover to all those celebrating this special time of the year.  To those with children at school its holiday time again!  If you are looking to go somewhere that is child friendly here are two great destinations to consider.  Quince Cottage in Gracetown, Margaret River area in WA for the wine lovers or The Terrace Grove in Ocean Grove VIC.  Both are kid's and pet friendly and just a short walk to the beach and the surf.

A Note from the Editor

Thank you once again for all your feedback regarding our newsletter and articles.  I’m pleased that some of you have found Eve’s article helpful.  I would like to divert slightly for the next two months but continued on the theme of diet by taking a look at Fussy Feeders.  I do hope those of you with feeding problems find these topics helpful.

Thank you for your feedback and recipes for our new web page. Please continue to send them in, any contributes are greatly appreciated.

Our Recipes for Kids this month has been sent in by Rachael from Randwick and is called ‘Sweet Potato Custard’.  Each month I will post up a new recipe so if you have something your family enjoys please let us all enjoy it.

As we approach winter I would like to tell you about a new product that has come to my attention called Cosy Grips.  They are a clever gadget that helps to keep the duvet on the bed.  If you are tired of your child’s quilt falling off them during the night, this may be the solution you are looking for.  Cosy Grips simply slide under mattress and fasten to cover or duvet on either side. They are just the thing for children transitioning from cot to bed and great for bunk beds or for little wrigglers.  No more getting up to check if your child is still under their covers.  Now you can all have a better night's sleep!  For more information please go to www.cosygrips.com

February 2011

Tuesday, February 01, 2011

Wow! What a way to start 2011!  Cradle 2 Kindy would like to offer our condolences to all those who have suffered in the floods and bushfires.  Our prayers are with you.

Topics of interest:

I'm please most of you have found the topics of our articles interesting.  It seems back to school is a very popular topic at the moment so I would like to continue along these line with this month’s article.  I am also including for your reference the previous articles Preparing for Childcare or School and our article by mother and primary school teacher, Lee Madigan. Childcare and School Preparations as a refresher.  C2K would like to wish all first time attendances all the very best for the year of leaning ahead

A Note from the Editor

First of all my apologise for the second January newsletter which miraculously went out on its own accord mid Jan.  I was tidying up the archives and off it went.  Sometimes I'm totally confused at how these gadgets work.  I'm sure they have a mind of their own.

The subject I would like to address in this month newsletter affects many children and their parents.  That topic is colic and reflux.  Information on these topics can be discussed during a consultation on Newborn Care, Baby Care or our Toddler & Child visitation.

Reflux

As a mothercraft nurse I visit many homes with unsettled babies.  Parents pacing the floor, pulling their hair out having tired every remedy and potions family and friends have suggested with little or no improvement.

There may be several reasons why a baby is unsettled one of which may be what is commonly called 'colic'.  What is ‘colic’?  Health professionals today believe that colic is in fact 'silent reflux'.   Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) is common in babies and is due to an immature sphincter muscle between the stomach and the oesophagus.

Unfortunately in many babies ‘silent reflux’ (where a baby doesn’t vomit) often goes undiagnosed as it is still been treated as colic or in some cases parents believe that it is normal for babies to have an unsettled period.  If untreated reflux can cause complications such as increased risk of SIDS, ear and respiratory infections, teeth decay, ulcerated oesophagus.  Please note not all unsettle babies have reflux.

Typical symptoms of a child with GOR are:
Birth to 9 months - frequent unsettled periods (often known as the witching or arsenic hour) followed by long catch up sleeps.
3-9 months - a baby who struggles to feed well often coming off the breast/bottle crying and not finishing their feeding.
A toddler or child - who has feeding problems – fussy, selective, small eater or conversely overeats to alleviate discomfort.

For more symptoms please read our article Irritable Baby Syndrome - colic/reflux

For those who have or suspect they may have a child with GOR and are looking for practically tips to assist them through this difficult period, Cradle 2 Kindy offers not only invaluable suggestions but ongoing support.

A well informed mother is less likely to be stressed and is therefore better able to cope with the demands of her child.

Please don't hesitate to call us if you are having problems or would like a visit.  If you would like to know more please read our Newborn Care, Baby Care and Toddler & Child information or ring Sally on 0409 721 145.

Parents Testimonies

Marie's Testimonial

I rang Cradle 2 Kindy when my mental health was at its lowest after having a 6 month old that had never slept for more than 20 minutes, day or night. Our coach was a life saver, literally. Firstly I was so impressed that she could come at such short notice.  She diagnosed reflux and assisted in a routine to help manage the reflux and to have my little one self-settle. From that first night our now 7 month old has slept through the night. My husband was originally unhappy with my decision to have someone come as he could not see how they could make a difference in such a short time.

However he is now telling everyone how it was the best money we have ever spent and he wished we had done it earlier. So thank you Cradle 2 Kindy, you have restored my sanity, given me a new life as the happy person I used to be.  It has been over 4 weeks now and everything is going wonderfully. We are all getting sleep and are a much happier family.

January 2011

Happy New Year!  I hope you have all had a safe and joyful Christmas and holiday season.

Under our topic, tips for summer in our December newsletter, I should have mentioned take a raincoat and cardigan with you when going out!  Wow!  I can't remember a stranger summer season!  Cold winds, rain and hail for Sydney and heat wave for Perth and every imaginable weather change in all the other Australian states.

Topics of interest:

The most popular topic for those with toddlers remains to be toilet training.  I'm also please the starting childcare and school has be helpful.  Don’t forget to read our last years topic as well: Preparing for Childcare or School.  This may help those who are preparing their loved ones for school, brush up on the last min preparations.

Many parents have told me they wish they had had our Nursery Preparations service before buying the baby's things as they now realise how useful it would have been to avoided buying things that they now realise are not as useful as they thought they may have been.

A Note from the Editor

This month I would like to look a little closer at one of the topics we cover in our Newborn Care service.

Newborn Care

Our service doesn't only extend to first time parents but also parents who may be having their second or possibly their fourth child and who are looking to gaining a few more tips to help their parenting experience.  It is also reassuring the you have your own parenting coach to guide you through your baby's journey helping you to avoid some of the pitfalls that you may encounter along the way.

The subject I would like to touch on this month is assisting with establishing: Breastfeeding

As we all know breastfeeding doesn't come as naturally or as easy for all mothers.  In fact sometimes it is more of a torture for both mother and baby than a loving nurturing experience. We, at Cradle 2 Kindy, would like to correct this and make it a more enjoyable experience.  There should be no discomfort while feeding, you should not dread the moment your baby wakes, you should not feel exhausted and sleep deprived and you should most certainly have time off for yourself to rest or spend with your husband or your other children.  A sleep deprived, stressed and anxious mother will not be able to give her child the best of herself, and in many cases her milk production will be hampered.

A relaxed, rested mother is better able to cope with the demands of her new baby.  A rested baby is a happy baby who feeds and sleeps well.  A baby that feeds too frequently usually doesn't feed well, is very gassy from an overload of lactose and therefore may not be settled between feeds.  The breastfeeding mother may not be properly 'emptying' her breasts and could therefore be contributing towards factors that may lead to mastitis.

Knowing in advance some of the tips to improve your baby's attachment, how to take measures to avoid mastitis and how to increase or decrease your supply is a great advantage when breastfeeding.  Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions can provide professional advice in all these areas.

We also realise not everyone can or wants to breast feed and although we are very pro breastfeeding we are not 'Breastfeeding Nartzis' (as some of our clients would call them) but we will discuss with you a non bias view of breastfeeding and support you in whatever decision you make.

During our Newborn Care visit we can teach you how to correctly attach your baby and may cover topics such as increasing your supply, assist with how to attach a supply-line or SNS feeder, expressing and storing breast milk, how to avoid mastitis, posture feeding, breast refusal, fussing on the breast, supplementary feeding, weaning off a nipple shield, when to introduce a bottle, tips of weaning from the breast and twin feeding.

Please don't hesitate to call us if you are having problems with breastfeeding or would like a visit or know anyone who may benefit from this service.  We also have a Gift Voucher for our three hour Newborn Care consultation.  If you would like to know more please read our Newborn Care information or ring Sally on 0409 721 145.

Cradle 2 Kindy also provides an opportunity for parents to have time off by providing Respite for Parents a Night Nurses or a Professional Babysitter.

Thank you for your support.  As you have supported us in 2010, we will continue to support you through 2011 and beyond!

This Month's Article

Eve Reed an Accredited Practising Dietician has contributed and article Getting Enough Iron.  This article may not only interest breastfeeding mothers but women and children in general.  I do hope you find it helpful.

Parents Testimonies

Tracey's Testimonial

Although I desperately wanted to breastfeed I was in a terrible state and ready to give up.  I had terrible damaged, cracked and bleeding nipples, was using the nipple shield on one side and was expressing from the other.  I had received advice and had a lactation consultant visit with no success.

My husband had heard of Cradle 2 Kindy through a colleague at work so we arranged a visit.  Having gone through agony every time I put my baby to the breast I was extremely anxious and very tentative about feeding my baby.  So, you can imagine how terrified I was when our coach wanted to put my baby straight onto the sore nipple.  But my fear soon went. The coach first demonstrated a new technique she called the 'flick' method.  It was amazing!  I couldn't believe it was that simple.  Now, no more nipple shield, no more top up with the bottle and no more expressing just pain free breastfeeding.  I'm loving it.  Why isn't this method taught by all the midwives?

Ian's Comments

My wife and I were absolutely impressed by our coach's knowledge and confidence and more importantly effectiveness.

Here is a small sample of the mothercraft nurse, we used to assist with our twins. When she came to our home she literally transformed our lives into some form resembling order.  She was to the point, no nonsense and very practical, whilst being aware and considerate of our ways and concerns.  In one afternoon session and a follow up, she had our daughter breastfeeding after us trying with hospital staff for 3 weeks!

November 2010

Christmas, Hanukah and the school holidays are on their way.  Are you prepared!  For those looking for holiday ideas I have included two great spots which are both family friendly under our 'What's Happening?' heading.

Enjoy this month's newsletter; I hope you find something of interest that may help you or your friends and family in their journey as parents.

A Note from the Editor

Thank you to all those who have given me feedback on the articles.  Please keep your comments and suggestions coming.  If you have anything you would like others to know about (non commercial) then please send me an email so I can include it in this section.  This includes baby/children’s products that you would like to pass on to others.

In this month's Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions service I would like to move on from babies and take a look at our service for the older child; our parenting assistance for Toddler and Child. If you are unaware Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions, as the name suggests, provides assistance to parents with children from birth to 5 years. Our Toddler and Child service is for children from around 18 months up to and including 5 years of age.

Toddler & Child

This service addresses problems or difficulties primarily around behaviour. We cover topics such as recognising the needs of your child, developing their self esteem, teaching techniques promote sleep, bedtime routines and night waking, moving a child from the cot to the bed and teaching them to stay in their bed, establishing a daily routine, dispelling temper tantrums, how to address problems before they begin, advice on weaning, solids and food refusal, toilet training, non acceptable social behaviour such as biting, pinching and hitting, preparing for a new baby, tips on sibling rivalry, ideas for play and development, and very importantly - time out for yourself.

Our visits may cover an overnight stay to assist with sleep routines and night waking issues.  Alternatively we may offer a three hour or extended day visitation to cover topics involving behavioural management.

This service includes information on your child’s age related needs, two weeks of follow up phone calls, a series of weekly e-letters to assist you for a month and an e-book with information on age appropriate tips on parenting, our monthly newsletter and access to our member's area. Cradle 2 Kindy also provides an opportunity for parents to have time off by providing Respite for Parents a Night Nurses or a Professional Babysitter.

Before your personal parenting coach from Cradle 2 Kindy comes to your home we suggest both parents prepare a list of questions you would like to cover.  We will then go through this list as well as other topics we thing may be appropriate for your particular family situation to help enhance your parenting skills and achieve a harmonious household.

Testimonial:  "C2K has changed our household beyond belief. If someone had told me that by putting the steps in place discussed in one phone call our 2yr old would be staying in bed within 10 minutes and sleeping through the night and back to having day sleeps after 3 nights I wouldn’t have believed it. C2K has given us the tools to be better parents, and given us the chance to spend time together once the kids are in bed by 7pm...not 10pm! Even though we only spoke on the phone and emailed for our coaching we are so pleased with the results! Sally was always available whenever we had any queries and always took the time to talk through the process without it ever feeling rushed or that our 'issues' weren’t important". Danielle, South Australia

If you know anyone with a baby who you think may benefit from a visit from Cradle 2 Kindy please feel free to forward them our contact details.  On the other hand you may like to give them a Gift Voucher for a Baby Care visit.

E-book testimonial: "We have found your Toddler and Child e-book a great help with our daughter.  It not only provides practical tips but it is also very straight forward. We found the tips on behaviour very helpful for our 3 yr old especially in regards to setting boundaries, preparing for a new baby and sibling rivalry.  We have put many of these techniques into practice particularly in preparation for our second child which we feel had really helped our daughter now that the baby is home.  We have now ordered the 0 - 3 month e-book.  They are a great asset to me and my husband. Thanks.  Janelle"

What's Happening?

November 14-20 is Postnatal Depression Awareness Week.  To assist us help raise awareness and reduce the stigma of PND I have asked Beyond Blue to provide us with some facts.

"Depression affects one in 11 women during pregnancy and one in seven mums will experience depression in the year following the birth of their child.  Having depression and anxiety is not a normal part of having a baby, having the ‘baby blues’ and/or sleep deprivation is not PND.  Postnatal Depression does not go away on its own.  But help is available and with the right treatment, you can recover.  It’s important to get help early – talk to your GP or contact beyondblue on 1300 22 4636 or infoline@beyondblue.org.au

Help raise awareness and reduce the stigma of depression by doing sometimes, simple – talking about it.  Talking openly about depression and anxiety does help reduce the stigma.  To find out more and share the facts with your family, friends and local community go to the beyondblue website."

Holidays are just around the corner!  Have you made any preparations?  Are your thinking of taking a trip interstate and wondering where to take the family?  I have just the place for you.  Are you wine lovers? Take a look at Quince Cottage in Gracetown WA.  Views of the beach and a short drive to Margret River.  Maybe that's a bit far, why not try The Terrace Grove in Ocean Grove VIC. Kid's and pet friendly.  It's just a short walk to the beach and the surf.

This Month's Article

After attending a conference last month where Dr. Janet Green (PhD Senior Lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney) spoke on the dangers of Iodine deficiency I asked her if she would allow me to share her facts with you.   The Article is titled 'Iodine Deficiency'.

Kathaleen's story

“We had ongoing problems getting our toddler to bed and getting her to stay in bed during the night.  She was constantly fighting us in the evenings and often falling asleep in the lounge watching TV.  We knew this was not right but what else could be do!  When put to bed asleep she would wake during the night and sneak into our bed.  If we were to exhausted to move her she would often stay there till the morning.  We called Cradle 2 Kindy in desperation.  Our coach stayed two nights providing assistance and practical tips that really helped.  After 4 nights of following the routine our daughter now happily goes to bed and sleep in till 7 am.  What a change.  I wish we had called them earlier.” Penrith, NSW

September 2010

Spring is now upon us so let's make the most of our lovely sunny days and cool nights before the heat sets in.  I hope you will enjoy this edition of our Cradle 2 Kindy newsletter.  Happy reading!

A Note from the Editor

My apologies for the 'missing link' in the last newsletter.  If you do notice any glitches or errors in the newsletter or on the website please let me know so that I can amend them immediately.

To continue bringing your attention the services we at Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions provide, I would like to highlight Newborn Care in this issue.

Newborn Baby Care

It is often very intimidating coming home after spending time in hospital where professional assistance is just a buzzer away. Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions can also be just a phone call away.   This service provides a home visit with a minimum of 3 hours (which may be extended if needed), two weeks of phone assistance, our e-book with tips for parents with babies 0-3 months old and 4 follow up emails to keep you on track.

Those who have experienced our parenting service have continued to recommend it to their friends.  Why? Because there's nothing out there quite like it.  We provide you with your very own parenting coach who can take you through from your arrival home till your child is five years old!

The topics covered are - parent support, breastfeeding, how to prevent sleep issues - cat napping and snacking, understanding sleep needs, newborn care, settling techniques for newborns, when and how to establish a routine, calming an crying baby, colic/reflux management, assistance with multiple births - twins and triplets.   We also provide handouts and charts on age appropriate needs for baby.

Testimonial:  After coming home from hospital, my husband and I were worried we were patting our son to sleep.  Whilst this was effective, we were worried in 7 months time we would still be doing the same thing. C2K was recommended to me by a work colleague.  The same day I called, our coach was at my house 6 hours later providing my husband and I with invaluable advice.  I would recommend Cradle 2 Kindy's service to any new parents wanting to establish good sleep / feeding routines for newborns.  Kerri Manly, NSW

“Cradle 2 Kindy provided us with a parenting coach who gave both myself and my partner the confidence to settle a newborn, even though it was our second baby, we had a lot to learn. Our coach was a great help and would recommend Cradle 2 Kindy services to any new or old parents.” Wendy - Newtown, NSW

If you know anyone with a baby who you think may benefit from a visit from Cradle 2 Kindy please feel free to forward our contact details.  On the other hand you may like to give them a Gift Voucher for Newborn Care visit.

E-book testimonial: "I would just like to thank you for your great e-books which had been a wonderful asset to me and my husband.  We have an 11 month old who has always been a handful.  We put some of your techniques and advice into practice about 5 weeks ago and have seen a dramatic change in his behaviour.   He has begun to feed himself and is generally much better behaved both during mealtimes and during the day.   I must say our house is more like a home now with a happy baby which means a happy mummy and daddy.  We are certainly a much more relaxed family.  I will definitely be purchasing the Toddler and Child e-book soon.  Thanks.  Isabelle"

This Month's Article

Our guest writer this month is Elizabeth Carter, registered psychologist and owner of Bravo Communication. Her article is titled Reflecting on Motherhood.  "Some years ago, on meeting my 2 daughters, a friend said “You’re so lucky, you’re girls are lovely.  They are so friendly and polite.”  I said “Thank you” feeling the pride and joy that goes with such a moment.  Later, on reflection however, I thought to myself, “What did luck have to do with it?”   I’m not lucky, it was hard work and I made a lot of sacrifices." ..... click here to read the full story Reflecting on Motherhood

Continuing on last month's topic we now take a look at  look at Phobias, Fears and Anxiety in Young Children and next month I will look at tips to help your children overcome their fears

Parents Testimonies

Nadine's Testimonial

"I called Cradle 2 Kindy when my baby was around 6 months old. She had been diagnosed as having reflux and was having extremely disturbed day sleeps. She was very irritable and the medicine she had been prescribed seemed to have little effect on alleviating her distress. She was also waking up several times a night, which was very exhausting for all of us. Our Cradle 2 Kindy consultant came around and stayed 2 nights, teaching us how to settle her when she woke. The second night she didn't wake at all and after that she stopped waking during the night at all, unless she was unwell. We were given advice on the appropriate measures to take to control of her reflux - which worked wonders. She is now 16 months old and doing great. I cannot recommend Cradle 2 Kindy highly enough and am so grateful for the wonderful help and support our Cradle 2 Kindy consultant gave us."   Mosman NSW

Welcome to winter and our June 2010 edition of Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions newsletter.

A Note from the Editor

This month Justine Watson tells us about the counselling support Groups for parents of children with special needs.  Carers NSW fund these groups to enable parents to meet and tell their story, give and gain support from other families and carers.  The focus is on how to take better care of ourselves and not ‘burn out’.  The groups deal with issues of family and relationships, the grief process and how to cope on bad days.  They can help with the feeling of loss, isolation, exhaustion and the impossible role of parenting different children.  The groups run for 2 hours 8 consecutive weeks and are run by a counsellor who is a mum of a child with Autism.  These groups are held in Chatswood and will commence on 28 July.  For further information and to secure your place contact Justine 0414 237 383 justine@counsellingforall.com for more information go to www.counsellingforall.com

Justine is a mother of a child with special needs and understands the daily stress and strain on carers and their families and she provides a safe and supportive environment to discuss a range of issues.  Her great passion is self care and how to stay sane for the long haul.

This Month's Article

Dr Andrew Campbell, Consultant Psychologist, specialises in child and adolescent behaviour talk to us this month on learning difficulties and what parents can do to help. His article 'Promoting Good Learning Behaviour & Attention' states: "A lot of parents aim to stimulate their children early in order to promote good attention and learning abilities. This is a wonderful thing to do, but can sometimes lead to overstimulation of the child’s mind".....  click here to read the full story.

I have also gained permission to print an article some of you may have read in the April Sydney’s Child magazine titled 'Feeding Frustration'.  I thought this article was very interesting as it points out the complications that may occur if reflux is not picked up in the first few weeks of a babies life. "When Karen Eriksen’s son began refusing almost all food at the age of two, it would take five years and several specialists to establish what the problem was."...... click here to read more

Next month I have asked Michelle Fox a registered psychologist to talk about the psychological impact of your baby’s reflux on you and your family.

Jan's Comments

“Cradle 2 Kindy has a good website and good customer service.  I was really happy with the service I received.   Our coach was able to come and see me the same day I made an inquiry which was a big relief and I was able to start on the program ASAP.  I learnt more from this visit about routine and settling than with other books/courses and even from a stay at one of the mothercraft centres here in Sydney".

Anna's Comments

"As a first time Mum and in my first week of sleep deprivation and breastfeeding issues, I was very overwhelmed and really not sure where to turn.  A friend from work had nothing but praise for Cradle 2 Kindy and I thought I had nothing to lose.  Our coach was here on the same day I called which was a real blessing as I was quite overwhelmed at the time.  She more than lived up to her reputation.  I had two pages of questions that she very patiently let me work through, although most were answered during the course of her visit. She was very empathetic and practical with great tips on settling and feeding.  She helped me implement new feeding and sleeping routines that have made for a much happier baby.  I have learnt that over feeding and cuddling too much are NOT the secrets to a happy baby.  An excellent service".

For those who have the DVD and books 'Your Baby Can Read' we have just re stocked our 'Your Baby Can Learn' books.  These books teach:
Shapes -Babies will learn geometrically-related shapes instead of the typical shapes found in most baby books.
Numbers -Dr. Titzer uses research from infant perception studies to help your baby learn the concept of number as well as learn to read numerals.
Patterns -This book teaches logic patterns using colourful photographs and words. For example, "big dog, little dog, big dog, little dog, big dog, little dog, big dog, What comes next?"
Colours -This book teaches lighter and darker shades of colours.
Prepositions -Some of the most frequently used words in English are prepositions. Most babies are not specifically taught these words. Imagine how much more language your baby will understand if she or he comprehends prepositions.

Danielle's Testimonial

“C2K has changed our household beyond belief. Our parenting coach was always available whenever we had any queries and always took the time to talk through the process without it ever feeling rushed or that our 'issues' weren't important".  Koolunga, South Australia.

Roslyn's Comments

"Our coach was professional, friendly and skilled. Always responsive on the phone and with emails.   We appreciated the mothercraft advice that was as an additional service to the circumcision support provided. It was very practical mothercraft advice.   We also appreciated the routine provided.  Even though I was a bit reluctant to try it at first, it has been working perfectly".

If you have been or are a client we would appreciate if you fill out the Evaluation Form. We would like to share your testimonials, comments or stories to help encourage other parents who may be in a similar situation.

Thank you.
