For those in Sydney who have missed summer this year I'm told that winter will be quite severe let's pray that there are some lovely warm sunny days to help us through. I hope you didn't forget daylight savings and turn the clocks back one hour!

This year I'd like to go back and look at some topics that have, in the past, been popular. This month's article has helped many parents understand the Irritable Baby Syndrome. "As a mothercraft nurse I visit many homes with unsettled babies. Parents pacing the floor, pulling their hair out having tried every remedy and potions family and friends have suggested with little or no improvement. The nightmare some families go through with their babies often results in shattered confidence, mental and physical exhaustion which can lead to postnatal depression, family feuds and marital breakdowns." Cradle 2 Kindy was recommended to us by a work colleague the day before I went on maternity leave. Of all the baby recommendations that were given to us it’s been the best. Our coach came to us on day 2 after coming home from hospital. By having her in so early it helped us get confidence where we had none as we had no prior experience in parenting or indeed with young children.

Our baby boy looks like he has reflux, we were given some practical solutions to try and overcome this early. We were taught about the importance of trying to get into a routine and were given lots of settling techniques to try and ensure we do the best for our baby and retain our sanity. Summer has finally caught up with us here in Sydney hopefully leaving behind the flooding rain and thunder storms. I have certainly enjoyed the sunny warm/hot days as a friend has been visiting from Spain. My second mobile phone continued to play up till it too died! So now I am on my third phone! I'm praying this one will be hassle free for many years. I still recommend you keep trying to call me if you are unable to get through to me when you call. I hope you have all had a wonderful holiday and ready for the new year. I was fortunate enough to have nearly 3 weeks in Perth where there was lots of lovely sunshine which I made the most of before coming back to the rain and overcast weather of Sydney. I had a lovely time catching up with friends and family and lots of time relaxing. On my return I had quite a few days of mobile phone problems so I'm very sorry if you were unable to get through to me or didn't get a reply to messages left. If you are calling please just keep trying. The best times to call is between 12 and 6pm. God willing all problems have now been ironed out!

Lesleigh's Story

It was virtually impossible to settle our baby who would only sleep for 45 mins and if she did sleep it was in the pram or on me! She cried/screamed most of the day. Everyone would try settling her but to no avail. My husband and I were averaging 3 hours sleep a night as she woke every few hours. I had read every book – trying not to overstimulate her, giving her the dummy (I used this all the time) feeding on demand (when she cried), all the settling techniques from Karitane etc. Nothing worked. After 3.5 months of this stress and sleep deprivation, I was physically and mentally exhausted and I could feel myself getting depressed. A friend sent me an article on reflux and my bub had a whole host of the symptoms. I immediately contacted Cradle 2 Kindy and it was the best thing we have ever done. After two nights with our nurse, our baby started sleeping through the night! I am still in a state of shock as I write this (two weeks later). We continued to follow her recommendations and there has only been 2 nights that she hasn’t completely slept through since our nurse came and that is because we had noisy party goers staying next door. She also sleeps during the day now in her cot! She now resettles herself and sleeps without a dummy. I still cannot believe it. She is such a content little thing and feeds much better now too. I feel like I have bonded more with my baby in the past two weeks then in the 3 months prior as she is calm and happy and we can actually play without her screaming during so much of her awake time. I am so relieved that my baby is no longer in pain (thanks to being put on the correct medication) and is actually sleeping. And catching up on sleep is a blessing for me and my hubby too! Thank you Cradle2Kindy for your support, professionalism and for your expertise which has changed our lives. I am actually enjoying being a mum now.

Happy New Year! I hope you have all had a safe and joy filled holiday season with family and friends. Thank you to Cradle 2 Kindy and our coaches experience in settling babies. The last 9 months I have suffered severe sleep deprivation. My baby boy would wake me at night every 2 to 3 hours. The best nights were when he would wake me 3 times. I am totally against leaving baby to cry and shutting the door. I have read all the popular books on baby sleep and visited a paediatrician in order to end sleepless nights. Nothing worked. Our coach came over and in 2 nights she was able to teach us to settle our baby boy. As a result he now sleeps through the night. It wasn't easy, but these 2 nights were worth it. our coach taught us how to better interpret our sons crying. Now everyone can sleep! My little rascal, me, my husband and neighbours! Hurray! A Note from the Editor

With our winter weather behind us and summer on its way please remember babies and toddlers can easily dehydrate. Keep your child's water consumption up during the summer months to keep them well hydrated. Although we have to remember to keep our children in 100% shade and well covered when in the heat of the sun, we must also remember Aust has one of the highest Vit D deficiencies. So please, give your child a little sun mornings before 10 am and evening after 3pm. Also please remember to use a dark wrap over the pram when you’re out and about not a light one as the glair is bad for their eyes. This month I am looking at one that is not so obvious but has been mentioned several times in relation to products imported from countries that have far lower standards than ours.

Formaldehyde and Aromatic Amines

Formaldehyde and Aromatic Amines are toxic chemicals which have been added to the garments being manufactured in China. These chemicals have been known to cause several medical problems including rashes, headaches and asthma. They are used in natural fabrics such as cotton and wool to reduce the crinkles and are found not only in adult clothing but those made for babies and children.

The advice given to help reduce these chemicals in our clothing is to wash them frequently before wearing them.

It was a bit of a whirlwind for the time our parent coach was here as our son was hysterical, but I felt a real sense of compassion for what we were dealing with, when others had told me to 'deal with a crying baby'. (we had even been to emergency with him and they sent us home with leaflets on colic). Our coach quickly diagnosed reflux and sent us to a great paediatrician – Dr James. He's on Losec and Zantac and now his reflux is under control. We feel we can finally get to know our little boy! It's changed his life and brought happiness and smiles where there were tears and pain. I couldn't ask for anymore than that. I feel I can call our coach anytime and she will always endeavour to help and give confidence that your doing the right thing - or not be afraid to let you know if not! This month we are taking a break from the poisons found around the home as I’d like to bring to your attention research that is being carried out on dyslexia.

The Seed of Literacy is looking for infants aged between birth and 6 months to help establish links between early speech and language development and later literacy skills.

The Seeds of Literacy is a 5-year project aimed at identifying early precursors of one of the most difficult tasks we ever learn, reading. We will compare the development of language skills of 100 infants with and without a family history of dyslexia. Each infant’s speech, language, and pre-reading skills will be recorded at regular intervals from 6 months through to 5 years, and the results will help establish links between early speech and language development and later literacy skills, and may assist in developing earlier screening and interventions to give all children the best possible start at school.

All parents and infants are encouraged to apply, parents who may be dyslexic themselves, or parents interested in reading and their child’s development. If you have an infant aged between birth and 6 months, you may be eligible to participate. Welcome to our Spring newsletter. Please remember this is a time of changing temperatures so dress your child in layers that can be removed as the day warms up.

As the weather becomes warmer you may like some tips on Transitioning out of a baby wrap. We encourage parents to wrap babies till around 7-10 months as this assists good sleep. For tips on wrapping we have a video and diagram that may help in our article - How and When to Wrap Your Baby.

A Note from the Editor

Since July this year I have been covering some of the common poisons we may have in our homes. Poisons often come in products that are found readily around most homes some of which are less obvious than others. The ones I have covered to date are Sodium laureth sulfate, parabens and talc.

Topic of Interest

This month I will take a look at mineral oils.

Mineral Oils

There are several types of mineral oils such as Paraffin oil, liquid petrolatum, White Mineral Oil. These oils may have several potential health risks especially to small children and babies.

Some baby oil for instance contains mineral oils which used in the bath may be ingested or inhaled. Some of the health risks are:

Inhalation:
This can causes irritation to the respiratory tract. Symptoms may include coughing, shortness of breath. Inhalation of mist or vapor may produce aspiration pneumonia.
Ingestion:
Can cause serious diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and possibly abdominal cramping. Aspiration of the mineral oil into the lungs can cause pneumonia.
Skin Contact:
Prolonged contact may cause irritation or dermatitis.
Eye Contact:
Mists or fumes can irritate the eyes causing discomfort..
Chronic Exposure:
Prolonged or repeated skin exposure may cause dermatitis. Highly refined mineral oils are not classified as human carcinogens. However, related forms of untreated and mildly-treated oils are listed as human carcinogens.

An alternative is to use oils that are not derived from mineral oils.

Annette's update email

Thought I would update you on how Lily is going. Since we last spoke Lily was refusing the bottle and going on 15-18 hr hunger strikes. We spent a few days in hospital as her personality changed. Our Paediatrician thought that Lily might be more wary of the taste of Neocate so she suggested trying another formula that the hospital stocks. We tried Lily on this formula while we stayed in hospital so they could watch her for possible reactions. Thankfully Lily didn't react.

We have since changed her to that formula and she now takes 150-180 ml per feed and feeds every 4 hrs. We still give her the dream feed between 10-11. Sometimes she sleeps through till 5:30-7 am and sometimes she gets up between 3-4 am, at which point we resettle her to sleep. She is still taking Nexium in 2 doses. She is able to put herself to sleep and has nice long sleeps during the day for 2 - 3 hrs.

A Note from the Editor

With our winter weather upon us please remember to rug your babies and toddlers up when going out doors. If you are concerned about how much to dress your children in please read our article on Changing Seasons and how it Effects your Child's Temperature and our link with our Clothing Guide chart.

Baby’s room should be heated where possible as dooners and loose bedding are not safe. All bedding should be tucked in firmly under the mattress. If your baby is sleeping in a wrap you can line a larger wrap with a shorter, flannelette to make it warmer.

Sleeping bags are a great transition from a baby wrap. Although we encourage parents to wrap babies till around 7-10 month to assists with sleep, we also suggest when using a sleeping bag to continue to use a top sheet as part of babies sleep association. This will help when moving them from a cot to a bed.

Topic of Interest

As mentioned in our last newsletter over the next few editions I am looking at some of the common poisons and hazards found in our cupboards. These hazards are often disguised in familiar household products used around most homes such as parabens, talc, mineral oils and formaldehyde.

Last month we looked at parabens, this month I would like to take a closer look at talc.

Talc Products

Talc is another unknown toxin commonly used on babies. It can also be found in a wide variety of products such as body powder, garden pesticides, flea and tick powders and in smaller quantities in products such as deodorants, antacids, chalk, food processing. Where the greatest concern is, is in the products where talc is the main ingredient. This is where it poses the most serious health risk. These are in baby powder and perfumed body powder.

Talc is toxic and has been known to cause lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses and can for this reason endanger baby’s lungs. Medical records have shown that as early as the 1980s several thousand infants each year died or became seriously ill following accidental inhalation of baby powder. Nowadays many brands of baby power have replaced talc with cornflour.

Talc has also been known to cause ovarian cancer in women who regularly use talc in their underwear or on sanitary pads. Some scientific studies have found talc to be closely related to asbestos.

Carla's Story

My youngest of 3 children was catnapping during the day but sleeping well at night till recently when she began to wake frequently at night too. I was becoming more and more sleep deprived myself. I need my sleep to tend to the everyday demands of our older children. I heard about Cradle 2 Kindy through a friend and gave them a call. June was a month of night waking babies. I’m pleased to say all are sleeping much better since learning how to self-settle.

It is these poisons that I would like to take a closer look.

Baby Body Wash Products & Parabens

Sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl ether sulfate can be found in many personal care products including baby products which claim to be soap free such as liquid soap and shampoos. Technically these products are soap free but there is a catch. Sodium laureth sulphate is actually a detergent an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent which is also used in cleaning products such as washing up detergent and floor cleaner. Something you would not use on your skin let alone your baby’s delicate skin.

Many of these so called ‘soap free’ products are a major cause of dry skin and may contribute to eczema and dermatitis. Read all labels on your baby products and try to avoid any with harsh detergents.

Parabens can be found in many of the main brand baby products and other products such as shampoos, soaps and cleansers and are known to cause dermatitis. Recently they have been linked with some types of cancers.

Parabens are used as a preservative in topical pharmaceutical products. They can also be found in cosmetics, skin care products, medications and foods.

A Note from the Editor

May was an interesting month for me. I visited my sister in Geelong and helped her clean up the garden. The forecast was for rain and, as I only had 2 days to get a lot of weeding done, I prayed. It seems that I was in the only place that it didn't rain for which I was very thankful. It was amazing how much work was done. The day I left, my sister said, it poured and didn't stopped for days! I then flew on to Adelaide for a couple of days addressing food refusal and behavioural issues with a very opinionated 2½ year old

Thank you to everyone who has sent in their favourite recipes we shall be adding them to our new web page. Please continue to send them in, any contributes are greatly appreciated.

In some of our Recipes for Kids I have suggested disguising foods that children often have a dislike for, such as vegetables. In this month recipe we have a rather strange combination which I hope all the family will enjoy. Pink Pancakes.

This month I have asked the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children to tell us a little about themselves.

The Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children

(RIDBC) provides a wide range of innovative educational programs for children with hearing and/or vision impairment, including services for children with additional disabilities.

RIDBC is Australia’s largest independent special educator. Founded in 1860, it is also one of Australia's oldest charities. Over 970 children with significant vision and/or hearing impairment are benefiting from RIDBC's broad range of tailored services. As well, RIDBC provides vision and hearing screening to around 2000 babies and children each year.

Educating and supporting children from their first weeks of life, this support continues for a long as needed, which may be right through their teenage years, providing education and specialised assistance to them and their families. As well as conducting centres at several locations in Sydney, Newcastle and the Central Coast in NSW, RIDBC provides support services in mainstream schools across Sydney and a remote service, RIDBC Teleschool, for families in regional areas across Australia.

RIDBC Teleschool connects families across Australia with vital education and support. The service is delivered directly into their home via videoconferencing, and is individually structured especially for each child and their disability.

The Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children’s Renwick Centre conducts research and professional studies in the field of education of children with sensory impairment. The RIDBC Renwick Centre is affiliated with the University of Newcastle and offers a range of postgraduate degrees and diplomas as well as conferences, seminars, and workshops for teachers, therapists and professionals who work in this field.

Through education, RIDBC seeks to close the gap between the life experiences of children with hearing and/or vision impairment, and those without. Topic of Interest

This month I would like to highlight one of the topics we at Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions cover during our Baby Care service. This service is for babies from around 3 months to approximately twelve months of age.

Baby Care
Our baby care service primarily addresses problems or difficulties that have arisen within the first few months of baby's life. The most common issue parent's face is dealing with poor sleep. Catnapping during the day (waking after 30-45 mins) and night waking. Poor day sleep can and often results in frequent snack feeds. If a baby is not taught how to self settle during the day they often start waking frequently during the night.

From 3 months of age babies should be feeding 4 hourly during the day with their last feed around 10pm followed by an 8 hr sleep without a feed. Their day sleep should be a minimum of 2 hours 3 times a day not including the evening sleep before the dream feed.

Sleep is very important. Not enough sleep can hinder a child's physical and mental development and weaken their immune system. If your baby is not getting sufficient sleep, both during the day or at night, Cradle 2 Kindy can assist to help correct this problem. We also address issues with breast, bottle and food refusal, starting solids, weaning, setting boundaries, age appropriate play and reflux management.

Cradle 2 Kindy provides you with an in home service with your own personal parenting coach. We can provide you with professional advice to help enhance your parenting skills and achieve a harmonious household.

Our service includes information on your baby's age related needs, two weeks of follow up phone calls, a series of 4 weekly e-letters, an e-book with information on age appropriate tips on parenting, and access to our member's area which has extra charts and information.

The good news is that all is going well! I think since you came to stay with us, I've had to get up maybe twice to attend to baby who is now 10 months. She still wakes up about once a night for a grizzle but will put herself back to sleep after about 5 minutes. We've been a little worried about her waking her sister but she seems to sleep through it.

The baby is also sleeping really well during the day. I usually put her down at around 12 pm and she'll have a bit of a grizzle but will usually drop off after about 5 minutes and will get a solid two hours. Unheard of!

Our 3 yr old responded really well to the bedtime routine too. When I tell her it's time to brush her teeth, she immediately hops off the couch and makes her way to the bathroom. And then once that's done, she starts asking for her story. She's usually half asleep by the time we get to the end and then she gets tucked up with her teddy. What a darling.

Thanks so much for your help! Getting some regular sleep has changed our lives!

Welcome to our April newsletter and a Happy Easter or Passover to all those celebrating this special time of the year. To those with children at school its holiday time again! A Note from the Editor

Thank you once again for all your feedback regarding our newsletter and articles. I’m pleased that some of you have found Eve’s article helpful. I would like to divert slightly for the next two months but continued on the theme of diet by taking a look at Fussy Feeders. I do hope those of you with feeding problems find these topics helpful.

Welcome to our autumn newsletter! School holidays will soon be upon us again! Here are two great destinations to consider. It seems articles regarding children attending childcare and school remains our most popular topic at the moment so I have asked dietician Eve Reed to give us a few tips on packed lunches, these tips can also be applied to stay at home toddlers and children too. I have also included a section for healthy recipes that kids love. Now that sounds like a contradiction but if you have any favourite recipes to contribute they will be greatly appreciated.

A Note from the Editor

The area I would like to look at this month is families who may be seeking professional help but are unsure if they really need it. These families may be first time parents or families having their third or possibly forth child.

Cradle 2 Kindy visits a variety of family dynamics and helps with many challenges that parents face with children from birth to five years of age. Many of these visits involve babies and children who have difficulty sleeping.

Sleep Issues

If you are not sure if your child has a sleep problem ask yourself the following questions and if you answer any with a "YES" then your child is probably experiencing sleep problems.

Do you have a baby who sleeps an hour or less per sleep cycle?
Are you feeding your baby every two to three hours?
Do you have difficulty getting your baby or toddler off to sleep?
Does your baby have an irritable or unhappy time most days and you can't resettle them?
Is your baby dependent on an outside influence to help him/her get to sleep? (Nursing, rocking, patting, dummy, sleeping with someone, breast or bottle feeding to sleep).
Has your baby’s daily routine been upset due to sickness, travel or teething or has the environment changed causing him/her to be unsettled?
Do you have an infant (over 3 months) who sleeps less than eight hours at night or wakes early or for two or more feeds during the night?
Do you have a toddler who is constantly waking at night or getting out of bed and needing to be resettled?
Does your child sleep in your bed and you would like him/her to learn to stay in his/her own bed?
Would you like to teach your child to go to bed earlier or without an argument or to sleep longer than 5 am in the morning?

If you would like to avoid any of the above, we have the program to help you.

Before commencing on a settling program it is wise to:

check baby/child isn't sick.
check baby/child's temperature.
check with your doctor that baby/child doesn't have a ear or urine infection.

If your baby/child has been checked and cleared by your doctor yet continues to be unsettled you may like some assistance to teach them how to self settle. I found the Cradle 2 Kindy website through a forum on another sight where a mother with a similar problem had made a recommendation. We have a nine month old who catnapped during the day and needed me to rock her in my arms or feed her to sleep. She was constantly waking during the night and needing my husband or I to settle her and was very dependent on her dummy. We were at our wits end having tried several methods to try and help her to learn to self settle. The last method we tried was the pick-up put-down method which nearly broke my back. I just couldn’t do this anymore and needed help. Cradle 2 Kindy sent a parent coach to our rescue. She taught us some very practical tips on settling and remained with us for two consecutive nights to support us. I must admit it was tough but it wasn’t long before we saw a dramatic change. My husband put her to bed on the second night and it wasn’t long before she was asleep. I was also amazed at how much happier she was during the day and when she woke up from her sleep she chatted to herself instead of crying. It was the best money we have ever spent.

A Note from the Editor

First of all my apologise for the second January newsletter which miraculously went out on its own accord mid Jan. I was tidying up the archives and off it went. Sometimes I'm totally confused at how these gadgets work. I'm sure they have a mind of their own.

The subject I would like to address in this month newsletter affects many children and their parents. That topic is colic and reflux. Information on these topics can be discussed during a consultation on Newborn Care, Baby Care or our Toddler & Child visitation.

Reflux

As a mothercraft nurse I visit many homes with unsettled babies. Parents pacing the floor, pulling their hair out having tired every remedy and potions family and friends have suggested with little or no improvement.

There may be several reasons why a baby is unsettled one of which may be what is commonly called 'colic'. What is ‘colic’? Health professionals today believe that colic is in fact 'silent reflux'. Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) is common in babies and is due to an immature sphincter muscle between the stomach and the oesophagus.

Unfortunately in many babies ‘silent reflux’ (where a baby doesn’t vomit) often goes undiagnosed as it is still been treated as colic or in some cases parents believe that it is normal for babies to have an unsettled period. If untreated reflux can cause complications such as increased risk of SIDS, ear and respiratory infections, teeth decay, ulcerated oesophagus. Please note not all unsettle babies have reflux.

Typical symptoms of a child with GOR are:
Birth to 9 months - frequent unsettled periods (often known as the witching or arsenic hour) followed by long catch up sleeps.
3-9 months - a baby who struggles to feed well often coming off the breast/bottle crying and not finishing their feeding.
A toddler or child - who has feeding problems – fussy, selective, small eater or conversely overeats to alleviate discomfort.

She was very hard to be around and especially to see her crying and screaming in pain all the time. Our parenting coach gave us suggestions on how to administer the medication effectively and also assisted me with sleep techniques and settling aids. These things were just amazing. We now have a happy baby that smiles and giggles and best of all sleeps!! Nothing was ever a problem for our coach. I rang her so so many times and she was always willing to help.
