Faye's Testimony

My bub had trouble sleeping during the day time since about 2 to 3 weeks old. My friend recommended Cradle 2 Kindy to us and the initial visit suggested that my child had silent reflux which prevented him from sleeping.

The best advice we received from Cradle 2 Kindy was the suggestion to establish a routine. The routine gave me assurance that I don't need to feed my baby as soon as he cries, and that feeding him every 4 hourly at the age of 4 weeks provided enough food for him to grow. The suggested routine worked pretty much straight away, and ever since the routine was put in, I only needed to wake up once to feed between 11pm to 6am. The bub has naturally dropped the middle of the night feed when he was 8 weeks old and has now been sleeping most nights from 10:30pm/11pm to 6am/7am. Thank God.

Sally has spent nearly 20yrs in Sydney, when she first arrived she worked as a mothercraft nurse for various hospitals and mothercraft centres before starting her own business.  Sally feels it is now time to move on to something she has been wanting to do for several years now.  Helping other who are less privileged.

Angies's Email

Hi Sally,

Thank you again. Noah (21 months) is doing really well. He is sleeping 19:00-5:30 pretty much every night. He even points to the cot when he wants to go to bed and doesn't want us to continue reading the night story :).

He has started saying No to most things, getting dressed, going outside, when outside doesn't want to go inside etc :).

Now that we know you are around and so knowledgeable it would be great to get some tips and ideas when we feel we need you.  I will not wait as long as I did this time to try and sort out an issue that easily could be "fixed" with a little help.

Thanks again it was lovely having you here to help us. At first I thought it would be really weird having someone in that we didn't know to stay overnight.  But it wasn't at all.

Thank You! Kind regards,

Angie and family

Thank you so much!!!

Saturday, February 01, 2014

2014 is a year of change for Cradle 2 Kindy Parenting Solutions.  We are cutting back on our monthly newsletter and bringing out a quarterly letter instead.  These letters will come out in Feb, May, Aug and Nov.  They will continue to address topics relevant to parenting from birth to five years old with guest writers from various fields.  We hope you will continue to enjoy them. Sally will continue to bring assistance to parents with her gems of wisdom and practical parenting tips but will also branched out to assist parents with a new program which helps parents transition to parenthood.  Read more about this in this month's article.

As promised this month's article is written by Kim Brickwood, and is all about the new program Sally will be bringing to families called: 'Bringing Baby Home'.  BBH™ is a program which teaches couples how to enhance their relationship with each other and with their children.  It aims to strengthen relationships not only during this sometimes difficult early period of bringing baby home but also empowers couples through their journey of parenting.  Sally is passionate to see this program introduced to all couples.  If you would like to know more about 'Bringing Baby Home' please email us through our Contact Us page.

Unlike her mothercraft skills where she teaches parents practical tips on raise their babies and children, BBH™
deals more with parents relationship.  Sally will  teach on topics such as transitioning to parenting and how to increasing couple’s confidence by strengthening their relationship. This program has been proven to improve the quality of life for babies and children by strengthening their families. BBH™ is certified by the Gottman Institute.

Updates

I'm not sure if you have heard the latest news in regards to SIDS.  In Nov 2013 the Herald Sun stated new research had found ‘BABIES who die from SIDS have brain stem abnormalities regardless of whether they were exposed to risks such as suffocation or co-sleeping’.

Analyses of 71 infants who died suddenly and unexpectedly over 11 years revealed that all babies had abnormalities of four neurochemicals in the brain stem.  These neurochemicals are essential in assisting the body adjust to its environment.   Dr Duncan said research, published in the journal Paediatrics, suggested this abnormality left the infants unable to adequately respond when faced with a stressor while asleep. For example in a healthy infant the brain would detect low oxygen levels which would wake the baby who would then turn its head to be able to breathe.  She said, “Infants with the abnormality did not "respond properly" in the same situation, which lead to death.”

An international research team is looking into whether a blood test can assist with early detection to identify at risk infants.

Maggie's Testimony

Our almost 6 month old daughter had been a catnapper since birth during the day and had fed 2-3 times at night and was easy settle to sleep until approx 4.5 months of age, where the night sleeps got progressively worse to waking every hour until almost 6 months old. I found it difficult to try and resettle or even have her on a schedule as we already have a busy 3.5yr old. However, as the baby was not sleeping, neither was I and this could no longer continue as I was very close to a breakdown!!

I had heard of C2K through a friend with positive results, so we called Sally. Our baby was immediately diagnosed with reflux and Sally gave us a management plan to help her back to sleep and resettle. I cannot thank Sally enough for the immediate change she has made to our baby's sleep and to my own. I had slowly lost my confidence over the past few months, but after a 2 night visit from Sally, I already feel myself getting back my confidence and feeling like "me" again.

Thank you so much!!!

Happy New Year!  I pray you are all having a safe and joyful holiday season. I hope this new year will bring many pleasant surprises for you and your family.

As previously mentioned this month we have an article on bed wetting, by Caroline Walsh (SCHN) from the Children's Hospital Westmead.  In February we have Kim Brickwood article on 'Bringing Baby Home'. A course I am doing to help counsel couples in the realities of transitioning to parenthood. This course aims to strengthen relationships during this sometimes difficult period.  Kim is passionate to see this program introduced by all maternity hospitals and through obstetricians.  If you would like to know more about 'Bringing Baby Home' please email us through our Contact Us page.

Just a reminder that you need to keep your child's water consumption up during the summer months to keep them well hydrated. Also please remember to use a dark wrap over the pram when you are out and about, not a white one as the glare is not good for their eyes.

This Month's Article

This month's article is on Bed Wetting. "Nocturnal Enuresis or bedwetting is a very common condition of childhood. Bedwetting, once the child has started school, can cause considerable anxiety and stress, this in turn, may affect the child’s self-esteem and mental health. It can affect peer relationships, educational opportunities and can impact on family dynamics. So seeking treatment, sooner than later is recommended." ... click on the link above to read more.

Jessica's thank you card

Dear Sally,
Just wanted to say thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for coming over and helping out with our baby girl.  You have saved our marriage and improved my relationship with our baby.  I couldn’t imagine what my life would be like now if I didn’t make that phone call to you. (I know it all sounds very dramatic but it’s the truth).

I still cry sometimes but it’s because I think about the pain our little girl when through when we she was a baby with reflux.  After all, I am so new in this profession and having your coaching me is the best experience so far.

Thank you once again.  Jessica.

Parenting Tips

Continuing from last month’s Parenting Tips I’m looking at UCB Word for Today on: Law and order
LAW AND ORDER (2)
'...Love your children by disciplining them.' Proverbs 13:24
Children who are a joy to live with don't get that way by living in a lawless home. Ever see the film Bonnie and Clyde? The big story behind Bonnie is the mother who raised her. She thought everything Bonnie did was 'cute.' She actually eulogised her: 'As the flowers are made brighter by the sunshine and dew; this world is made brighter by folks like you!' But Bonnie wasn't so cute when she went on a murderous rampage. Giving your child structure makes them feel cared for and secure. So here are two guidelines: 1) Explain the rules clearly. Punishing a child over a rule they don't understand just makes them resentful. The fewer your rules the better-just make them understandable, doable, and observable. 'Preaching' and moralising only creates resistance. 2) Enforce the rules consistently. What brings a smile today shouldn't bring a slap tomorrow. Inconsistency weakens your authority and breeds disobedience in them. Here are some things to shun: a) Avoid comparisons. No child should be expected to be just like another. b) Avoid hurtful labels such as 'You're stupid, lazy, bad, a waste of time,' etc. Describe their actions; don't demolish their self-worth. c) Avoid idle threats. Enforce the rule, or drop it. d) Avoid bribes; they just breed manipulation and diminish the importance of rules. e) Avoid making fun of their weaknesses. f) Don't fear saying 'No!' Their future success and happiness depend on learning to deal with it.

Parenting Tips

To finish this section I would like to share something I read recently on boundaries or 'law and order'. It started with a proverb ‘Discipline your children; you'll be glad you did-they'll turn out delightful to live with.' Proverbs 29:17

We're producing a generation of kids who are allowed to rear themselves with the aid of television, violent DVDs, and the Internet (which can be a minefield!). Often both parents work, leaving one child to supervise another. As a result they become a law unto themselves. 'A child left to himself disgraces his [parents]' (Proverbs 29:15 NIV). Most of us are loving parents, but our children need discipline and rules to live by. Love has a backbone, it's called law and order. Without it, love is just license. 'A refusal to correct is a refusal to love...' (Proverbs 13:24 Parents don't have to be overbearing, but children do need consistent and disciplined guidance. Enforcing law and order isn't easy. But the alternative is a betrayal of our children and our God-given responsibility! Failure to enforce law and order to gain short-term popularity with our kids always ends up costing us their long-term respect. Expecting younger kids to work out for themselves what's right and wrong is a burden they shouldn't have to bear; their neurological and moral equipment isn't sufficiently developed yet for such responsibility. The Bible says, 'Young people are prone to foolishness and fads; the cure comes through tough-minded discipline' (Proverbs 22:15 TM). Your children learn to make good decisions from the rewards and consequences of dealing with law and order at home. So don't fail them!

Maryanne's Comments

I thought having a second child with reflux I would know what to do. I thought the things I learn on Sally's first would work on my second child. However as time went on my confidence wained and I once again needed the skills and a professionals point of view to help improve my situation. Sally gave me back the strength to get through this difficult time and to ensure we came out the other side. I was initially very nervous, however her suggestions proved to be worth it.

Sally's second visit gave us the support and confidence we needed to settle our baby. She gave us numerous methods to try to help us find the best way to fit our situation. Rather than one solution fits all, we came away with 3 or 4 different things to try which gave us the confident to continue.

Sally listened intently and supported us throughout the 2 night stay. She reinforced a few very helpful tips which proved to be very successful. Although reflux still appears to be the key factor which is affecting our baby's sleep, we have stuck to the routine. Our baby is definitely coping with the situation better than she was prior to Sally's visit. Sally also reinforced skill's I'd forgotten from her previous visit with our first child she also offered us some great ideas for meal times and bedtime preparation.

Thank you so much, Sally and Cradle 2 Kindy

Parenting Tips

Teaching children social skills such as coping when things don’t go their way or when things go wrong, focusing our attention on a person when spoken to, how to listen and be sympathetic, how to cope in hostile situations and how to communicate are essential skill we need to help our children achieve to equip them for the challenges they will face throughout their life.  Some tips to achieve this are:
  • Setting an example
  • Eye contact
  • Learning about our and other’s feelings and emotions
  • Self control
  • Learning how to relax, quiet time
  • Talking and listening skills
  • Sharing
  • Giving other their space

Faye's Testimony

Sally first came to help my family when my son was 12 months old and had struggled with severe reflux since birth. We had never been able to get him to sleep through the night and had honestly paced the floors trying to settle him most nights as he wouldn't sleep for more than an hour at a time.

After enlisting Cradle 2 Kindy, he slept through on night 2 all on his own. The knowledge and experience Sally was able to provide was invaluable. I was extremely relieved to have found Sally and couldn't believe any of this was possible. He just needed to be taught that he could re-settle himself.

Sally has been back a few times to help with bad toddler behaviour; it's so nice to have someone to call when you feel like you need that extra helping hand. 2 years later, my daughter was diagnosed in hospital with reflux also. My sister in law purchased a voucher for me as a baby gift, best present I received. Sally came straight out and helped us more than we thought possible.

Thank you so much Cradle 2 Kindy

Our glorious weather continues to spoil us. I do pray we don't have a scorcher of a summer!

In this month's article I am taking a look at a topic a client has asked me to comment on in regards to when, how and why to introduce a bottle while breastfeeding.  Next month we are looking at bedwetting, an article provide by Caroline Walsh (SCHN) from the Children's Hospital Westmead.

I have also asked Kim Brickwood to written and article on her program called 'Bringing Baby Home'.  I would like your comments on how useful you think this information will be for partners, as I am taking the trained in Feb 2014.  'Bringing Baby Home' speaks to couples about the realities of the transition to parenting and aims to strengthen relationships during this sometimes difficult time.  Kim is passionate to see this program introduced by all maternity hospitals and obstetricians.  If you would like to know more about 'Bringing Baby Home' please email Sally through our Contact Us page.

This Month's Article

This month's article is called 'Breastfeeding & Introducing a Bottle'.  "It was suggested by a client that I warning breastfeeding mothers of the danger of introducing bottles on a regular basis unless they have no other alternative.  I have decided to let her tell her story followed by my comments. ... "

I hope you found last month's article by Kerry Harley on Woman's Mental Health informative.

Parenting Tips

As many parents have asked me to assist with mealtime behaviour, this month we will address some of these issues.  Mealtimes are a time to teach your child how to eat.  Your child is the student and the meal table the class room, the lesson is the process of eating not the volume.  Remember it’s hard to be neat when you are just learning.  Expect a mess.

Mealtime Tips:

  • Feed a child on time a hungry tired child will not cooperate
  • Have a comfortable chair at the right level for the child to eat (strapped in if under 2yrs)
  • From the age of 6 months allow a child to assist feeding themselves and once this skill is mastered a parent should allow their child to feed themselves.
  • Be aware of your child’s skill level
  • Model good behaviour by eating together
  • Avoid stress at mealtimes
  • Set mealtime routines and a certain time to finish a meal do not drag it out if a child does not want to finish.
  • It can take up to 10 times at tasting food to establish a taste for it
  • Food is food not a play thing
  • Don’t use food as a bribe or reward
  • Food first, manners second
  • Use a warm washer for cleaning or give the washer to an older child to wash their own face and hands.
  • Contamination can be real for some children – food touching other food
  • Slow down – watch for cue’s
  • Don’t try to finish all that on the plate – start with small portions and don’t scrape the plate
  • Make mealtimes a enjoyable occasion
  • Remember misbehaviour is a sign that there is a skill our children have not yet learnt.  It’s an opportunity for new learning and you are their teacher.

It’s not WHAT you know, it’s WHO you know!!! Thank God I met Sally Hall.

What a life saver!! At 6 weeks my baby started showing signs of bad reflux. She was only sleeping in my arms during the day for 20 minute sessions. She completely refused the breast and it was even a struggle to feed her from a bottle at times. My days were spent rocking and patting her to help her feel comfortable. She was on Losec (suspended solution) but I felt it wasn’t working. A friend of mine with 4 children told me about Cradle 2 Kindy and how Sally had helped her son, now 10 years old, with a sleeping issue when he was 6 months old. She said “Call Sally and she will sort you out!” and she did.

Sally walked into my house and turned my life upside down. She went through how reflux works and how it affects baby’s sleep. Sally gave me a routine to follow, told me how to administer the medication correctly, and showed me how to swaddle her effectively, put her in sleep T so she could sleep more comfortably, then put her on a wedge for elevation and put a white noise CD on. What a different it made. My baby would now sleep in her cot during the day. I was armed with information on what to do when and how.

I can’t thank Sally enough. I really don’t think anyone understands what dealing with a reflux baby is like until you have to do it 24/7. I feel Sally has practical hands on experience which is a far cry from the highly paid doctors I’ve seen.

Sally to the rescue!!!!  Thanks for all your help and advice.

Regards, Amanda.

This Month's Article

My first speaker to respond to my request was Kerry Harley who has given us an article which is well worth reading on Woman's Mental Health.  Kerry is an RN RMW CAFHN, and has a Grad. Cert.  Mental Health(Adult)

"It is estimated that depression will be the number one cause of disability in both the developed and developing worlds by 2030 (WHO 2008)....." to read more please follow the above link.

Parenting Tips

In this month’s parenting tips I would like to unpack some of our tools for handling misbehaviour.

Consequences:
  • Consequences should be age appropriate
  • Consequences for a young child should be mediate while the ‘crime’ is still in the child’s mind. Consequences should fit the ‘crime’
  • Make a list of consequences that both parents agree with and keep it hand to avoid making emotional and inappropriate choices in the heat of the moment.
Distract and Redirect:
•    Avoid to much attention
•    Give it two attempts
•    Start playing and allow your child to join you
Systematic Ignoring:
•    Give little or no attention to inappropriate behaviour
•    Give attention/reinforce positive behaviour
•    We are not ignoring the child only the behaviour
Time out:
  • Is not a punishment it is to help a child calm down
  • Is to help a child self regulate, learn calming skills – is not always a consequence
  • Recognise the difference between an emotional overload and a tantrum.
Remember behaviours are maintained by the attention they receive.

Parenting Tips

This month I’d like to look at handling misbehaviour.  Here are some practical tips:
  • Avoid conflict where possible
  • Distract and or redirect
  • Remove object or child from the situation
  • Ignore where possible (avoid giving attention to minor events)
  • Time out (away from social interaction)
  • Warn of consequences
  • Avoid stand off’s and power plays
  • Avoid bargaining
  • Get down to a child’s level when talking to the don’t tower over them it is very intimidating
  • Use eye contact but don’t insist they look you in the eye if it is going to result in a power struggle.
  • Reset the situation
  • Do not criticise
If you use the words ‘good boy/girl’ follow through with WHY. What behaviour was good? Instead of saying 'good' try saying something like: "I like the way you did......"or "well done, cleaver boy/girl".

Hi, I just wanted you to know that I love your jersey wrap & have just ordered a second one.  They are so lovely & snug. My nearly 6 month old son still loves to be wrapped & since buying your wrap he has been sleeping through  the night without a peep, for 8 to 9 hours - wonderful! I have recommended them to other mothers so you may have had some more orders or will do in future.

Thanks so much, Anna

July 2013

Winter has arrived with a blast of cold weather so rug up and keep warm as it will be around for some time.  Please remember not to over dress your baby.  The best way to check if baby is warm enough is to put your fingers down the back of his/her neck.  It should be just pleasantly warm. If you need a reminder on how many layers to dress your children in during these cold winter months please take a look at our suggestions in Clothing Guide

I hope you found William Cowie article Jobs Ideas for Mothers Returning to Work useful. William has written another article for those thinking of returning to the work force.  See This Month's Article.

This Month's Article

This month William Cowie writes his article on Working From Home as a Bookkeeper.  "Finding legitimate work from home jobs is challenging. The internet is full of scammers offering unbelievable rates of pay for unskilled work. As I’ve learnt the hard way, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.... "

Parenting Tips

Continuing on our top tips for managing misbehaviour and encouraging children’s cooperation we look this month at our behaviour and reactions.

We are our children’s constant example and model so be consistent.  In setting boundaries warn once with an explication of the consequences for refuse to comply, if there is no compliance, follow through with the consequences or ‘threat’.  Let you ‘yes’ be ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no’!  Don’t say things that you are unable or unwilling to follow through with.  Consequences should be immediate not the next day or week. Children do not relate well to delayed consequences.

Assist your child before frustration sets in (yours or there’s).  Label feelings. Remain calm.  Keep your voice down. Deal with misbehaviour before you lose your temper. Do not discipline when you have lost your cool.  Teach your child how to calm themselves... talk with a friendly voice, use a happy face, count to 10, take 3 deep breaths. And always praise compliance and self regulation.

Felicia's Testimonial

My sister in law purchased a gift voucher for me as a baby gift, best present I received! Sally came straight out and helped us more than we thought possible. Thank you so much Cradle 2 Kindy.
